Resilient North Carolina Central Eagles Secure Thrilling Victory over Morgan State, with Steelers Coach Mike Tomlin in Attend

In a captivating display of HBCU basketball excellence, the North Carolina Central University (NCCU) Eagles survived a furious second-half comeback to defeat the Morgan State Bears 80–76 in a February showdown. The electric atmosphere was amplified by the presence of Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin, who attended the game to witness the resilience and determination of the Eagles.

Key Takeaway: The NCCU Eagles' hard-fought victory not only showcased the talent and grit of HBCU basketball programs but also highlighted the growing visibility and importance of these institutions within the broader sports landscape.

The Eagles dominated the early stages of the game, building a commanding 51–30 halftime lead behind their efficient shooting and ball movement. Led by Gage Lattimore's 21 points, including five three-pointers, NCCU's offensive prowess overwhelmed the Bears in the first half.

However, as HBCU basketball often proves, momentum can shift rapidly. Morgan State responded with a spirited second-half performance, outscoring NCCU 46–29 and cutting the deficit to a nail-biting four-point margin in the final minutes. The Bears' improved efficiency, pace, and ability to capitalize on turnovers kept the game suspenseful until the end.

"I thought the effort was there," NCCU head coach LeVelle Moton said postgame. "We played a lot of guys a lot of minutes, and we got a little winded.

But such is life — you've got to find a way through it."

The Eagles weathered the storm, relying on their depth and composure to secure the victory. Dionte Johnson and Jae'Slack provided crucial support, scoring 16 and 14 points, respectively, to complement Lattimore's efforts. The team's ability to attack the rim, draw fouls, and convert at the free-throw line (20-of-25) proved decisive in the closing minutes.

Adding to the significance of the moment, Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin was in attendance, providing further validation for the caliber of HBCU basketball. Afterward, Tomlin praised Coach Moton and the Eagles' resilience, stating, "Man, it was great. Watching my dude coach — and watching him win — made it even better."

HBCU Basketball Shines in the Spotlight

The presence of an esteemed NFL coach like Tomlin underscores the growing visibility and importance of HBCU basketball programs within the broader sports landscape. These institutions have long been hubs of athletic excellence, producing talented players and impactful coaches who have made significant contributions to the game.

The NCCU Eagles' thrilling victory over Morgan State not only showcases the competitive spirit and high-level play of HBCU basketball but also serves as a testament to the resilience, determination, and coaching prowess that these programs embody. As the HBCU community continues to rally around its student-athletes and celebrate their successes, moments like this remind us of the immense value and impact these institutions have on the lives of their students and the wider sports community.
