Posted By: Will Moss on February 18, 2026

ATLANTA - The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) announced its Baseball Players of the Week on Tuesday, Feb. 17, honoring exceptional student-athletes from the HBCU community for their impressive performances on the diamond last week.

Tyler Turner and Samuel Crew of Albany State University were the deserving recipients of this week's prestigious SIAC awards. Their standout play showcases the extraordinary talent and determination that HBCU baseball programs continue to produce, inspiring the next generation of Black student-athletes.

Key Takeaway: HBCU baseball players like Tyler Turner and Samuel Crew are making waves in the SIAC, demonstrating the immense potential of athletes from Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

Tyler Turner, a sophomore outfielder for the Albany State Rams, earned SIAC Player of the Week honors after an explosive performance at the plate. Over the course of four games, Turner batted an incredible .600 with two home runs, seven RBIs, and five runs scored, propelling his team to a successful 3-1 week.

Samuel Crew, a junior right-handed pitcher, was named SIAC Pitcher of the Week for his dominant outing on the mound.

In a complete-game shutout victory, Crew struck out 10 batters while allowing just three hits, showcasing his elite-level pitching skills and leading the Rams to a crucial conference win.

"Tyler and Samuel's performances are a testament to the exceptional talent and dedication of HBCU student-athletes," said SIAC Commissioner Anthony Holloman. "Their accomplishments not only honor their respective programs but also inspire the entire HBCU community."

The SIAC, one of the premier NCAA Division II conferences in the nation, is home to several renowned HBCU baseball programs, including perennial powerhouses like Albany State University. These weekly honors highlight the continued excellence of HBCU athletes, who consistently prove their ability to compete and excel at the highest levels of collegiate sports.

HBCUConnect Perspective: The recognition of Tyler Turner and Samuel Crew as SIAC Baseball Players of the Week is a significant moment for the HBCU community. Their outstanding performances not only showcase the talent and determination of HBCU student-athletes but also serve as a powerful reminder of the important role that Historically Black Colleges and Universities play in developing the next generation of sports leaders. By shining a spotlight on these exceptional players, we can inspire more young Black athletes to explore the enriching opportunities available at HBCUs, ultimately strengthening the HBCU community and its impact on the world of collegiate athletics.
