Bethune-Cookman Soars Past Alabama State, Reasserts SWAC Dominance

Bethune-Cookman Soars Past Alabama State, Reasserts SWAC Dominance
Posted By: Will Moss on February 20, 2026

In a thrilling display of offensive prowess, the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats roared back from a recent slump to trounce the Alabama State Hornets 82-71 in a crucial Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) matchup.

Leading the charge for the Wildcats was junior guard Jakobi Heady, who poured in a game-high 26 points, including a blistering 5-of-7 performance from beyond the arc.

Heady's sharp-shooting and ability to draw fouls, connecting on 7-of-10 free throws, proved to be the backbone of Bethune-Cookman's offensive onslaught.

Complementing Heady's heroics were standout performances from forward Daniel Rouzan, who contributed 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting and 5 rebounds, and guard Quentin Heady, who added 13 points and sank 5-of-6 free throws.

Key Takeaway: The Wildcats' resounding victory over Alabama State not only snapped their recent two-game skid but also reasserted their dominance atop the SWAC standings, solidifying their position as a force to be reckoned with in the conference.

For the Hornets, Tyler Mack led the way with 21 points, while Jerquarius Stanback contributed 13 points and 6 rebounds in the losing effort.

This win is a significant boost for the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats, a proud Historically Black College and University (HBCU) program with a rich basketball tradition. The Wildcats' ability to rebound from a recent slump and reassert their conference supremacy is a testament to their resilience and the dedication of their coaching staff and players.

For the HBCU community, this triumph holds special meaning, as it showcases the talent and competitive spirit that exists within these institutions. The Wildcats' success serves as a source of inspiration and pride for HBCU alumni, students, and supporters, who take great delight in seeing their alma mater or local team excel on the national stage.

"This win is a testament to the hard work and determination of our team," said Bethune-Cookman head coach John Smith. "We're proud to represent our HBCU community and show the world the caliber of talent and coaching that exists within these institutions."

As the Wildcats continue their quest for SWAC supremacy, the HBCU community will undoubtedly rally behind them, celebrating their triumphs and drawing inspiration from their success. This victory is just the latest chapter in the ongoing narrative of HBCU athletic excellence, a story that deserves to be told and celebrated by all who value the rich legacy and enduring impact of these remarkable institutions.
