Salisbury, NC - Livingstone College, a renowned Historically Black College and University (HBCU), recently celebrated its 147th Founder's Day with a stirring event that exemplified the spirit and strength of the HBCU community.

Held on February 5, 2026, under the theme "The Morning of an Audacious Idea," the celebration carried added significance as it marked the public return of President Dr. Anthony J. Davis, who had successfully undergone a kidney transplant.

Key Takeaway: Livingstone's Founder's Day celebration was not just a ceremonial event, but a powerful testimony of the HBCU's resilience, collective uplift, and unwavering faith in the face of adversity.

The convocation was a tapestry of history and hope, as students, alumni, faculty, and community members gathered to honor Livingstone's 147 years of audacious leadership. The event featured the Prayer Meeting Alumni Choir, Gospel Choir, and Concert Choir, setting the tone of reverence and celebration.

The ceremony included several significant moments. Bishop W. Darin Moore, a proud Livingstone College alumnus and vice president of the Board of Trustees, delivered the Convocation address and received the President's Award.

Two honorary Doctorates of Humane Letters were also presented, honoring Heather Patrek, the 35-year-old living kidney donor who saved President Davis' life, and Fred Stanback, the "Man of the Century" recognized for his decades of generosity and service to the community.

The celebration also marked a milestone for Bank of America, which received a President's Award for its $7 million investment in tax credits to support the renovation of Harris and Dancy residence halls, enhancing the student experience at this historic HBCU.

"I was told it could take up to seven years before I'd be eligible for a kidney transplant, but God had other plans. He sent me an angel. She saved my life."

The day's events culminated in a reception at the New Trent Gymnasium, where the celebratory atmosphere was infused with deeply personal stories. WBTV's Dedrick Russell led a moderated discussion between President Davis and Heather Patrek, sharing their shared transplant journey and the challenges they faced.

Livingstone's Founder's Day celebration reminded attendees of the enduring power of the HBCU tradition, rooted in resilience, collective uplift, and an unwavering belief in something greater than oneself. This event marks the beginning of Livingstone College's 147th year, not just with growth, but with a renewed sense of purpose and the knowledge that the HBCU community stands united in the face of adversity.
