HBCU Standouts Shine at the 2026 HBCU Legacy Bowl
Posted By: Will Moss on February 22, 2026

The 2026 Allstate HBCU Legacy Bowl was the stage for HBCU student-athletes to showcase their talents and impress NFL scouts. This premier all-star game featured the best players from Historically Black Colleges and Universities across the nation, and it did not disappoint.

JaQuan Kelly of Winston-Salem State Earns Offensive MVP

The standout performance of the day came from Winston-Salem State running back JaQuan Kelly, who led Team Gaither to a 27-23 victory over Team Robinson. Kelly was named the Offensive MVP after rushing for 76 yards on 10 carries, including a 22-yard touchdown sprint and a short second-half score that proved to be the game-winning touchdown.

Key Takeaway: JaQuan Kelly's combination of burst and power showcased his potential as an NFL prospect, making him one of the biggest risers from the HBCU Legacy Bowl.

Michael Lunz II and Quincy Robinson Shine on Defense

On the defensive side of the ball, South Carolina State defensive end Michael Lunz II was named Defensive MVP. Lunz finished with 1.5 sacks and two tackles, but his impact went beyond the stat sheet, as he disrupted the offense and set up a critical second-half interception.

Delaware State edge rusher Quincy Robinson also made a significant impact, delivering a game-sealing strip sack in the final minutes to preserve the victory for Team Gaither.

"Quincy Robinson's closing burst and strip sack in a two-minute situation gave him a signature moment for scouts to remember."

Other HBCU Standouts Showcase Their Talents

  • Bethune-Cookman quarterback Cam'Ron Ransom and tight end Travaunta Abner connected for two impressive plays, showcasing Abner's potential as a matchup problem at the next level.
  • Florida Memorial running back Jerodd Sims flashed his vision and toughness, cashing in on a special teams miscue to give Team Robinson a 13-10 lead late in the first half.
  • The Johnson C. Smith quarterback-receiver duo of Kelvin Durham and Deandre Proctor displayed their chemistry, with Durham finding Proctor for a touchdown to put Team Gaither back in front.
  • Defensive standouts like North Carolina Central's Max U'Ren, Morgan State's Erick Hunter, and Jackson State's Quincy Ivory and Reid Pulliam also made an impression with their playmaking abilities.
Key Takeaway: The HBCU Legacy Bowl provided a platform for these talented student-athletes to showcase their skills and put themselves on the radar of NFL scouts, further highlighting the wealth of athletic and academic talent at Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

As an HBCU-focused publication, HBCUConnect.com is thrilled to see the continued success and recognition of HBCU student-athletes at the HBCU Legacy Bowl. This game not only showcases the incredible talent within the HBCU community but also serves as a testament to the dedication and hard work of these players. The performance of these young men is a source of pride for the entire HBCU community, and we look forward to following their journeys as they pursue their professional dreams.
