Trailblazing HBCU Women Wrestlers Shine at NCAA Regionals

Trailblazing HBCU Women Wrestlers Shine at NCAA Regionals
Posted By: Will Moss on February 22, 2026

In a historic moment for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), three remarkable women wrestlers from HBCU programs made their mark at the NCAA Women's Wrestling Region III championships this past weekend.

Delaware State University's Louise Juitt (145 lbs.), Icart Galumette (117 lbs.), and Allen University's Isis Severe (131 lbs.) each finished in the top three in their respective weight classes, earning a place at the first-ever NCAA Women's Wrestling National Championships on March 6-7.

Key Takeaway: This achievement is a testament to the growing strength and prominence of HBCU athletic programs, particularly in the emerging sport of women's wrestling. These trailblazing athletes are making history and paving the way for future generations of HBCU student-athletes to excel on the national stage.

Juitt Dominates on the Way to the Finals

Louise Juitt, the first recruit to sign with the Delaware State women's wrestling program, put on an impressive display. She advanced to the 145-pound finals with a lightning-fast pin over Mount Olive's Savannah Chesney in just 27 seconds, followed by decision wins over Shonticia Taft of Lincoln Memorial (5-0) and Frostburg State's Amber Hunter-Snyder (8-1).

Though she fell short of the gold medal, falling to Presbyterian's Madeline Kubicki in the championship bout, Juitt's performance was a remarkable feat for the young program.

Galumette and Severe Earn Semifinal Berths

Icart Galumette of Delaware State earned a first-round bye, then dominated Morgan Layman of Frostburg State with a technical fall (11-0) in the quarterfinals. She lost in a technical fall to Presbyterian's Jenna Anderson in the semifinals.

Isis Severe of Allen University also made her mark, earning a 10-0 technical fall win over Leigh-Anne Verburg of Southern Virginia in the first round, followed by a 7-2 decision over Ingrid Penn of Marymount (Va.) in the quarterfinals. Severe's run ended in the semifinals, where she was defeated by Kassey Daughtery of Presbyterian via technical fall (10-0).

"These student-athletes have shown the resilience, determination, and talent that embodies the HBCU spirit. Their historic accomplishments on the national stage will inspire future generations of HBCU wrestlers to reach for the highest levels of competition."

HBCUConnect.com is proud to celebrate the achievements of these trailblazing HBCU women wrestlers. Their success not only highlights the growing prominence of HBCU athletic programs but also the incredible potential of student-athletes from these institutions to excel at the highest levels of collegiate competition. These young women are paving the way for others to follow in their footsteps and showcase the exceptional talent and passion found within the HBCU community.
