Posted By: Will Moss on February 24, 2026 The 5th Annual Allstate HBCU Legacy Bowl once again proved to be the greatest showcase of Historically Black College and University (HBCU) talent yet, delivering a game that will be remembered for years to come. In a back-and-forth battle that saw both teams post the highest point totals in the event's history, Team Gaither defeated Team Robinson 27-23 at Tulane's Yulman Stadium. The action was intense from the start, with the teams trading touchdowns early on before entering halftime tied at 13-13. But it was the defenses that ultimately decided the game, with several key plays in the second half proving to be the difference. Key Takeaway: The HBCU Legacy Bowl continues to showcase the exceptional talent and competitive spirit of student-athletes from Historically Black Colleges and Universities, providing a platform for them to showcase their skills and earn opportunities at the next level.
North Carolina A&T cornerback Aaron Harris shifted the momentum in the third quarter with a crucial interception, returning the ball to the 1-yard line and setting up a touchdown that stretched Team Gaither's lead to two scores. Soon after, North Carolina Central's Jelani Vassell sealed the goal line with another interception in the end zone. Although Team Robinson managed to return a pick for a touchdown in the fourth quarter, Team Gaither's defense held firm, with Delaware State's Quincy Robinson recording a strip sack in the final minute to help close out the game. Defensively, South Carolina State's Michael Lunz II led the charge, recording 1.5 sacks and making a key goal-line tackle that set up Vassell's interception. For his outstanding performance, Lunz was named the Defensive MVP of the 5th Annual Allstate HBCU Legacy Bowl. On the offensive side, Winston-Salem State running back JaQuan Kelly stood out, rushing for 76 yards on 10 carries and scoring twice, including a 22-yard touchdown run that gave Team Gaither early momentum. Kelly's second score, following Harris' interception return, proved to be the difference, and he was named the Offensive MVP. "What I took from this right here was opportunity," Kelly said. "I'm coming." The HBCU Legacy Bowl has become a premier showcase for NFL draft-eligible talent from Historically Black Colleges and Universities, providing these exceptional student-athletes with a platform to showcase their skills and earn opportunities at the next level. As Doug Williams, co-founder of the Black College Football Hall of Fame, eloquently stated, "It's all about an opportunity. To give them a chance to be seen." This year's 5th Annual Allstate HBCU Legacy Bowl not only delivered an unforgettable game, but it also reinforced the significance of this event for the HBCU community. By highlighting the incredible talent and competitive spirit of these student-athletes, the HBCU Legacy Bowl continues to shine a well-deserved spotlight on the rich tradition and excellence of Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
