Howard University Makes History with Dual Swimming and Diving Championship Sweep

Howard University has achieved a historic milestone in collegiate athletics, capturing both the men's and women's swimming and diving championships at the Northeast Conference Championships, solidifying its position as the premier Black swimming program in the nation.

The university's dual triumph on February 20 at the Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio, marks an unprecedented achievement in HBCU athletics. For the women's team, this represents the program's first-ever NEC title in history. The men's team secured its second consecutive championship and third title in four years, demonstrating consistent excellence at the Division I level.

Nic Askew, Director of Swimming & Diving and Tennis, emphasized the broader significance of this achievement beyond the competitive victories.

"This moment is about more than winning championships. It's about showing young swimmers and divers — especially those who may not see themselves represented — that they belong in this sport and can excel at the highest level."

Individual Honors and Recognition

The four-day championship event, held February 17-20, saw Howard athletes dominate individual categories as well.

• Zion Wilson – NEC Most Outstanding Diver
• Zuilda "Zuzu" Nwaeze – NEC Most Outstanding Swimmer (her third consecutive year receiving this honor)
• Courtenay Miller – NEC Diving Coach of the Year
• Both teams earned NEC Coaching Staff of the Year awards

Askew reflected on the season's accomplishments and their implications for HBCU athletics and representation in swimming.

"Watching these teams come together and accomplish so much really has been history in the making. Never before has a women's team from an HBCU won a conference title, and never before has an HBCU won back-to-back swimming and diving conference titles. These wins speak volumes about the talent and competitive nature of our program and what is possible for student athletes considering attending an HBCU."

Breaking Barriers in Swimming

The significance of Howard's achievement extends beyond the medals and titles. As the only HBCU with a Division I swimming and diving team, Howard is breaking barriers in a sport historically lacking Black representation at the competitive collegiate level. The program's success serves as both inspiration and proof of concept for prospective student-athletes considering HBCUs for their athletic and academic careers.
