HBCU Hoops Highlights: CIAA Tournament Day 1 Brings Drama and Upsets
|
Posted By: Will Moss on February 25, 2026 The opening day of the 2026 CIAA Basketball Tournament was filled with edge-of-your-seat action, as several Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) battled for a chance to advance to the next round. Women's Bracket: Claflin Survives Late Scare Against Lincoln (PA)The Claflin Panthers were tested in their opening-round matchup against the Lincoln (PA) Lions, overcoming a double-digit halftime deficit to claim a narrow 53-50 victory. Despite committing 11 turnovers and shooting just 20% from the field in the first half, Claflin found a way to battle back, thanks to a stellar third-quarter performance by Ashari Lewis, who scored 11 of her game-high 23 points in the period. The Panthers' defense also stepped up, holding Lincoln to just 8 points in the final quarter to secure the win. Key Takeaway: The ability of the Claflin Panthers to overcome adversity and grind out a tough win in the opening round showcases the resilience and competitive spirit that is so often on display within the HBCU basketball community.
Livingstone Earns First CIAA Tournament Win Since 2022The Livingstone Blue Bears snapped a long drought in the CIAA Tournament, earning their first postseason victory since 2022 with a 59-46 triumph over the Elizabeth City State Vikings. After a sluggish start that saw them shoot just 1-of-20 in the first quarter, the Blue Bears leaned on their defense to fuel a comeback, forcing 10 turnovers that led to 10 points in the second quarter. Nielle Reaves led the way for Livingstone, propelling the team to a strong fourth-quarter performance to seal the victory. Bluefield State Dominates Shaw in Opening RoundThe Bluefield State Big Blue wasted no time making a statement in the tournament, cruising to an 82-56 win over the Shaw Bears. Bluefield State came out firing on all cylinders, building a 25-8 lead by the end of the first quarter thanks to a balanced scoring effort and Shaw's sloppy play, which resulted in 11 turnovers in the opening frame. Azahreya Drayton-Gill led the Big Blue with a strong all-around performance, and five different players scored in double figures as Bluefield State coasted to a decisive victory. Virginia Union Outlasts Johnson C. SmithIn a closely contested matchup, the Virginia Union Panthers defeated the Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls 59-48. CIAA Player of the Year Bruni Martinez showcased her talent, recording a double-double with 23 points, 10 rebounds, 4 steals, and 3 blocks. Johnson C. Smith's Salonte Franklin also had an impressive game, posting a double-double of her own with 21 points and 15 rebounds, but it was not enough to overcome the Panthers' balanced attack. Men's Bracket: Lincoln (PA) Stages Dramatic Comeback Over ShawThe Lincoln (PA) Lions overcame an early deficit to defeat the Shaw Bears 69-63 in a hard-fought opening-round contest. Shaw led for much of the game, but the Lions remained within striking distance and eventually took the lead with four minutes remaining in the second half, never relinquishing it. Julius Olanrewaju led the way for Lincoln (PA) with a standout performance. Bowie State Dominates Livingstone in High-Scoring AffairThe Bowie State Bulldogs put on an offensive showcase in their 100-77 victory over the Livingstone Blue Bears. Bowie State came out firing, hitting 5 of their first 6 three-point attempts to build a 17-point lead. The Bulldogs' three-point barrage continued throughout the game, with 5 different players knocking down shots from beyond the arc, including Guy Fauntleroy off the bench. While Livingstone fought hard to trim the deficit, Bowie State's offensive firepower proved to be too much to overcome. "The opening day of the CIAA Tournament showcased the passion, determination, and talent that are hallmarks of HBCU basketball. These student-athletes have worked tirelessly to represent their institutions, and their performances remind us of the rich tradition and immense pride that define the HBCU experience. HBCUConnect is proud to celebrate these inspiring moments and the positive impact they have on the broader HBCU community." Originally reported by HBCU Sports.
