CIAA Tournament Thriller: JCSU Survives Nail-Biter Against ECSU

CIAA Tournament Thriller: JCSU Survives Nail-Biter Against ECSU
Posted By: Will Moss on February 26, 2026

BALTIMORE, MD β€” The CIAA Tournament kicked off with a thrilling contest that had HBCU basketball fans on the edge of their seats. The Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls (JCSU), seeded 3rd, took on the Elizabeth City State Vikings (ECSU), the 6th seed, in a razor-thin battle that showcased the passion and skill of these HBCU powerhouses.

The final score read JCSU 61, ECSU 60, but it hardly does justice to the back-and-forth drama that unfolded on the court. With 8 ties and 9 lead changes, this game felt more like a March Madness matchup than an early-round CIAA tournament game.

Key Takeaway: The CIAA Tournament has set the tone for an exciting week of HBCU basketball, as teams battle with resilience and composure in pursuit of the conference championship.

For the Golden Bulls, it was a true team effort that secured the narrow victory. Jared Davis delivered the game-winning layup in the final minute, finishing a perfect 5-for-5 from the field with 12 points. Anthony Williams knocked down 4 three-pointers on his way to 14 points, while Jamauri Bryant and Trey Pettigrew each added 14 points as well.

On the other side, the Vikings were led by the impressive duo of Jaquantae Harris and Donovan Flamer.

Harris poured in a game-high 23 points, going a perfect 9-for-9 from the free-throw line, while Flamer dominated inside with 22 points on 10-of-12 shooting and 8 rebounds.

"This wasn't sloppy. It wasn't survival because of mistakes. It was shot-making."

The statistics tell the story of a tightly contested battle. ECSU shot an impressive 45.8% from the field and 44.4% from three-point range, but JCSU's resilience in the key areas - rebounding, second-chance points, and free-throw shooting - ultimately made the difference.

As the CIAA Tournament continues, this opening-round thriller has set the tone for an exciting week of HBCU basketball in Baltimore. The Golden Bulls will now advance to face Virginia Union in the quarterfinals, but if this game is any indication, seed lines won't decide this tournament - the final minute will.

HBCUConnect's Perspective: This thrilling CIAA Tournament matchup between JCSU and ECSU is a testament to the passion, skill, and competitive spirit that defines HBCU basketball.
