Quinn Gray Elevates FAMU's Storied Football Legacy as New Head Coach

Quinn Gray Elevates FAMU
Posted By: Will Moss on February 26, 2026

When Quinn Gray stepped onto the field as the new head coach of the Florida A&M University (FAMU) Rattlers, the air was electric with a palpable sense of tradition and renewed energy. Gray, a former FAMU quarterback and HBCU legend, has returned home to lead his alma mater in their quest to reclaim the glory of their storied football program.

Gray's journey with the Rattlers began as an 18-year-old freshman, competing against FAMU greats such as Oteman Sampson and Pat "The Mad Bomber" Bonner, both members of the FAMU Sports Hall of Fame. Despite the fierce competition, Gray emerged as the leading passer in FAMU history, orchestrating the team's legendary "Gulf Coast offense" under the guidance of former head coach Billy Joe.

After a successful professional career in the World League of American Football and the NFL, Gray transitioned into coaching, ultimately leading the Albany State Golden Rams to a HBCU Division II national championship. Now, as the 20th head coach in FAMU's history, Gray's homecoming has ignited a wave of excitement and anticipation within the HBCU community.

Key Takeaway: Gray's return to FAMU represents more than just a coaching change - it symbolizes the rekindling of the Rattlers' storied football legacy, a legacy that holds deep significance for the HBCU community.

Gray's first practice as the new Rattlers head coach was a testament to his vision for the program.

He immediately brought in Billy Rolle, a FAMU Sports Hall of Famer and FHSAA legend, as an assistant coach, tapping into Rolle's deep connections in South Florida to bolster the team's recruiting efforts.

The practice itself was held on the hallowed grounds of Bragg Stadium, where Gray once honed his skills as a player. He made it clear that earning the right to step onto Bragg's turf would be a privilege reserved for those who have truly committed themselves to the Rattlers' tradition.

Among the players taking the field was Isaiah Knowles, the two-time SIAC Offensive Player of the Year and All-SIAC quarterback who followed Gray from Albany State. Knowles, donning the iconic No. 3 jersey, is expected to compete for the starting quarterback role, bringing his experience in Gray's offense to the Rattlers.

"We're going to be practicing on our grass fields. The way it was when I was at FAMU, you had to earn the right to go into Bragg Stadium. As long as I'm head coach, it's going to have to be a privilege that is earned to step foot on Bragg," Gray said, echoing the sentiment of reclaiming the Rattlers' storied legacy.

The HBCU Connect community is thrilled to see one of its own return to the helm of the FAMU Rattlers. Gray's deep roots within the HBCU ecosystem, his proven track record of success, and his unwavering commitment to the Rattlers' tradition make him the ideal leader to guide the program into a new era of greatness. As the Rattlers embark on their spring practice, the HBCU community eagerly awaits the next chapter in the team's storied history, knowing that under Gray's leadership, the Rattlers are poised to reclaim their rightful place among the elite HBCU football programs.
