JCSU Golden Bulls Upset Nationally Ranked Virginia Union in Thrilling CIAA Tournament Clash

JCSU Golden Bulls Upset Nationally Ranked Virginia Union in Thrilling CIAA Tournament Clash
Posted By: Will Moss on February 27, 2026

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Johnson C. Smith University (JCSU) Golden Bulls pulled off a stunning upset on Thursday night, taking down the nationally ranked Virginia Union University Panthers by a score of 64-63 in a thrilling matchup at the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Tournament.

Just two months earlier, Virginia Union had dominated JCSU by a lopsided 52-point margin. But in the rematch on the big stage of the CIAA Tournament, the Golden Bulls showed remarkable growth and resilience, delivering a performance that left the HBCU basketball community buzzing.

Key Takeaway: JCSU's upset victory over the nationally ranked Virginia Union Panthers showcases the competitive spirit and ability of HBCU basketball programs to rise to the occasion against top-tier opponents.

The game was a back-and-forth affair, featuring 11 lead changes and 9 ties. JCSU stayed composed, weathering runs by the Panthers and answering with runs of their own. Timely shooting, including three three-pointers from Justin Bumbray, proved crucial in swinging the outcome in JCSU's favor.

"We could have folded tonight, but we didn't.

I'm just so proud of my teammates."

Virginia Union, ranked in the top 20 nationally and top 5 in the region, controlled stretches inside and shot an impressive 77.8% from the free-throw line. But JCSU refused to let the game spiral, showcasing the physical, resilient style that defines CIAA basketball.

With this victory, JCSU advances to face the Fayetteville State University Broncos, the two-time defending CIAA champions, in the semifinal round. The Golden Bulls now carry momentum and belief, proving that in the CIAA, reputations don't win games - execution does.

HBCUConnect's Perspective

This thrilling upset victory by the JCSU Golden Bulls is a testament to the competitive spirit and talent that exists within HBCU basketball programs. The CIAA Tournament has long been a platform for HBCU teams to showcase their skills and prove they can compete with the best, and JCSU's triumph over the nationally ranked Virginia Union Panthers is a shining example of this.

For the HBCU community, this result is a source of immense pride, as it demonstrates the resilience and determination of these student-athletes to rise to the occasion and deliver a performance that will be long remembered. The JCSU Golden Bulls have shown that HBCU basketball is a force to be reckoned with, and their continued success in the tournament will undoubtedly inspire the next generation of HBCU ballers to reach new heights.
