Bluefield State's CIAA Conquest: Veteran Roster and Grit Carry the Newcomers

Bluefield State

In a conference known for its rich traditions and passionate rivalries, the Bluefield State Big Blues have made an indelible mark on the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) tournament. As the newest member of the prestigious HBCU league, Bluefield State has defied expectations, leaning on a roster of seasoned veterans and unwavering determination to forge a path to success.

Led by head coach Luke D'Alessio, a veteran of CIAA coaching, the Big Blues have meticulously assembled a roster that reads like a who's who of the conference. Boasting transfers from Shaw University, Bowie State, Elizabeth City State, Virginia State, Virginia Union, and Livingstone College, Bluefield State has effectively created a CIAA all-star team.

In their recent matchup against Claflin University, the Big Blues showcased the grit and determination that have become their trademark. Despite being outshot from the field and trailing for much of the contest, Bluefield State dominated the glass, grabbing 15 offensive rebounds and converting them into 23 second-chance points.

Their ball-handling prowess was equally impressive, committing just 7 turnovers against Claflin's pressing defense.

Key Takeaway: Bluefield State's formula of recruiting experienced CIAA players has proven to be a winning strategy, as they have been able to quickly adapt to the league's unique challenges and physicality.

For D'Alessio, this approach is intentional, as he believes players who have experienced the rigors of CIAA competition have a distinct advantage.

"Definitely the recruiting is my first choice of recruits are players within the CIAA conference," he said. "You have the experience of what it takes to win in the regular season and what it takes to win in the CIAA tournament."

This strategy has paid dividends for the Big Blues, who have embraced the physical and deliberate nature of their games. As D'Alessio puts it, "We could be down 20, 60, 100, we're going to keep fighting until the buzzer says zero."

For the HBCU community, Bluefield State's success in the CIAA tournament is a testament to the power of unity, determination, and the ability to thrive in the face of adversity. As the newest member of the conference, the Big Blues have quickly established themselves as a force to be reckoned with, proving that with the right mix of experienced players and unwavering grit, any HBCU program can rise to the occasion and make their mark on the CIAA landscape.
