Homegrown Talent: Prairie View A&M Alum Dante Carter Joins Deion Sanders' Coaching Staff at Colorado

Homegrown Talent: Prairie View A&M Alum Dante Carter Joins Deion Sanders
Posted By: Will Moss on February 27, 2026

In a move that underscores the growing influence of HBCU football talent across the NCAA landscape, former Prairie View A&M standout Dante Carter has been promoted to defensive line coach on Deion Sanders' staff at the University of Colorado.

Carter, who played for the Prairie View Panthers from 2020 to 2022, is the latest in a long line of HBCU graduates earning opportunities at the Power Four level under the tutelage of the iconic Sanders, himself a product of Jackson State University.

Key Takeaway: Dante Carter's promotion to Colorado's coaching staff represents another milestone in the expanding influence of HBCU football talent and the impact of Deion Sanders' mentorship in elevating these players to the highest levels of the sport.

During his time with the Panthers, Carter established himself as a force on the defensive line, recording 29 tackles, two tackles for loss, and 1.5 sacks in his senior season. His teammates affectionately knew him as "Big Punn," a nod to his size and dominating presence on the field.

Prior to his collegiate career, Carter earned the nickname "Baby Sapp" at St. Augustine High School in New Orleans, where he was named the District 9-5A Defensive MVP during his senior year.

Now, he'll have the opportunity to learn from another legendary defensive tackle, as he'll be coaching alongside Hall of Famer Warren Sapp, who serves as Colorado's pass rush coordinator.

Carter's swift rise through the coaching ranks began in 2024, when he joined the staff at Texas College as the defensive line coach. There, he helped guide the NAIA program to a fourth-place national ranking in sacks with 39, leading the team's conference in that category.

"Dante Carter's promotion carries added context because of Sanders' own HBCU background. Sanders coached at Jackson State before taking the Colorado job, and during his time there, he helped bring a different level of national attention to HBCU football."

The significance of Carter's move to Colorado cannot be overstated, as it reflects the growing recognition of the talent and potential within the HBCU football community. Under Sanders' leadership, the Buffaloes' coaching staff now boasts another HBCU alum, further solidifying the program's commitment to embracing the rich tradition and skills cultivated at these institutions.

For the HBCU HBCUConnect.com community, Dante Carter's journey from Prairie View A&M to the Power Four ranks serves as an inspiration and a testament to the caliber of players and coaches emerging from these historic institutions. As the HBCU football landscape continues to gain national attention, stories like Carter's will undoubtedly inspire the next generation of talent to pursue their dreams, both on and off the field.
