Bowie State's Darrell Brooks Retires After 16 Years of Excellence

Bowie State
Posted By: Will Moss on February 27, 2026

Bowie State University, a beloved Historically Black College and University (HBCU), has bid farewell to a legendary figure in its basketball program. After 16 successful years as the head coach of the Bulldogs, Darrell Brooks has announced his retirement, leaving an indelible mark on the school and the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) conference.

Brooks' tenure at Bowie State was marked by unwavering dedication, strategic excellence, and a deep commitment to the student-athletes he mentored. During his 16-year stint, he amassed an impressive overall record of 267-255, including a 145-119 record against CIAA opponents. His leadership guided the Bulldogs to two CIAA championships and three NCAA Division II tournament appearances, the most recent of which came in 2011 – a historic moment for the program.

The announcement of Brooks' retirement came after a hard-fought battle in the quarterfinals of the CIAA Basketball tournament, where the Bulldogs narrowly fell to the Fayetteville State University Broncos, the champions of the CIAA South division. In the postgame press conference, Brooks reflected on his illustrious career, stating, "I've been doing this for 40 years, I've been [at Bowie State] for 16. I'm just thankful to this University for everything they've given me, my wife, and my family.

I'll be around, we'll be around.
"

Key Takeaway: Darrell Brooks' retirement marks the end of an era for Bowie State basketball, but his legacy will continue to inspire future generations of HBCU student-athletes and coaches.

Brooks' impact on the Bowie State program extends far beyond the court. He was named CIAA Coach of the Year in the 2014-2015 season, after leading the Bulldogs to a 22-8 overall record and a CIAA North division championship. His dedication to developing well-rounded student-athletes has been a hallmark of his coaching philosophy, and his influence will be felt for years to come.

"I've been doing this for 40 years, I've been [at Bowie State] for 16. I'm just thankful to this University for everything they've given me, my wife, and my family. I'll be around, we'll be around."

For the HBCU community, Darrell Brooks' retirement is a bittersweet moment. While we bid farewell to a true legend, we celebrate his unwavering commitment to the sport, his players, and the Bowie State University family. His legacy serves as a shining example of the excellence that can be found in HBCU athletics, and his impact will continue to resonate for years to come. As Brooks steps away from the sidelines, the HBCU community extends its heartfelt gratitude and wishes him a well-deserved retirement.
