Coaching Swap Showdown: Fayetteville State and Bluefield State Clash for CIAA Glory

HBCU basketball fans are in for a treat as Fayetteville State and Bluefield State face off in the 2026 CIAA Men's Basketball Championship. This matchup is layered with irony, roster crossover, and coaching history, making it one of the most compelling title games in recent conference memory.

The storylines are simply unbelievable. Luke D'Alessio, who coached Fayetteville State from 2019 to 2025, recently took the head coaching job at Bluefield State. Meanwhile, Devin Hoehn, who resigned from Bluefield State last April, was named the new head coach of Fayetteville State the very next day. Now, they meet for the CIAA championship trophy.

Bluefield State: Back With a Purpose

Bluefield State has made a remarkable run in just its third season back in the CIAA. The Big Blue advanced to the championship game with a gritty semifinal win, securing their second consecutive appearance in the title game. A victory would secure their first-ever CIAA championship.

D'Alessio acknowledges the challenge ahead, especially if it's his former team, Fayetteville State, on the other side. "Fayetteville State is a terrific team," he said. "To me, they're the best team in the conference because of all the experience they had.

Fayetteville State: In the Mix Since 2020

Fayetteville State is making its fourth CIAA championship appearance since 2020, having won the 2022 title over Virginia Union. They are seeking their third conference championship overall.

Hoehn, who reached the brink of the title last year, knows the magnitude of the moment and the compelling narrative. "Crazy stories, for sure. Couldn't have wrote it any better. Definitely a crazy story," Hoehn said. "Those guys are going to be ready. We're going to be ready. It's going to be a very interesting game, for sure."

"It's going to be a little crazy if Fayetteville State wins. I don't know what to tell you about that one. I'm sure that's the one that everyone would like to see because the storyline is unbelievable. I can't even believe it."

Hoehn emphasized that the key to Fayetteville State's success has been their depth and balanced scoring. "Really dangerous," one FSU player said. "We got five, six guys that can give you 15 plus on any given night."
