Tennessee State Tigers Roar to Historic Ohio Valley Conference Title After 31-Year Drought

Tennessee State Tigers Roar to Historic Ohio Valley Conference Title After 31-Year Drought
Posted By: Will Moss on March 01, 2026

NASHVILLE, TN - The Tennessee State University Tigers men's basketball team made history on Saturday night, clinching a share of the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) regular-season title for the first time in 31 years. In a dominant defensive performance, the Tigers cruised to a 67-42 victory over the UT Martin Skyhawks at the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center.

This long-awaited championship is a testament to the Tigers' unwavering commitment and the dedication of their coaches and players. The last time Tennessee State won the OVC title was in the 1993-94 season, a drought that has finally been broken.

Key Takeaway: Tennessee State's OVC title triumph marks a significant milestone for the HBCU community, as it showcases the excellence and resilience of their student-athletes and the program's rich basketball tradition.

The Tigers' dominance was on full display throughout the game. They never trailed and held the Skyhawks to just 32.6% shooting from the field and a mere 19% from beyond the arc. Tennessee State's stifling defense forced 19 turnovers, which they converted into 20 points.

Aaron Nkrumah led the way for the Tigers with a game-high 20 points, shooting 7-of-15 from the field and a perfect 4-of-4 from the free-throw line. Travis Harper II chipped in with 16 points and 5 rebounds, while Antoine Lorick III added 6 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 blocks.

"This championship is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our players and coaching staff.

We've been building towards this moment for years, and I'm proud to see our program reach this milestone."

- Head Coach Brian 'Penny' Collins

The Tigers' dominance was evident from the start, as they went on an 11-0 run midway through the first half to take a commanding 17-6 lead. They maintained their defensive intensity throughout the game, limiting the Skyhawks to just 21 points in each half.

With this historic victory, Tennessee State earns the top seed in the upcoming OVC Tournament, where they will look to continue their momentum and secure an automatic bid to the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament.
