COLUMBIA, S.C. - In a thrilling showcase of HBCU basketball excellence, the Benedict College Tigers men's team clawed their way to a resounding 59-52 victory over the Lane College Dragons in the 2026 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Men's Basketball Championship presented by Toyota.

The Tigers, representing one of the crown jewels of the HBCU community, delivered a masterclass in tenacious defense to outmuscle their opponents and punch their ticket to the tournament quarterfinals. This hard-fought triumph not only keeps the Tigers' title hopes alive but also serves as a rallying cry for HBCU sports fans across the nation.

Key Takeaway: The Benedict College Tigers' victory in the SIAC tournament showcases the athletic excellence and community pride that defines HBCU sports programs.

Leading the charge for the Tigers was senior guard Jamal Johnson, who poured in a game-high 18 points to go along with 5 rebounds and 3 assists. Johnson, a local product from nearby Irmo, South Carolina, has been a steady presence for the Tigers all season, and his clutch performance in this pivotal matchup once again demonstrated the caliber of talent that HBCU student-athletes possess.

Complementing Johnson's heroics was the defensive effort of the entire Benedict squad, which held the Dragons to just 52 points on the afternoon.

The Tigers' stifling pressure and disciplined rotations forced numerous turnovers and limited the Dragons' scoring opportunities, a testament to the team's commitment to the defensive end of the floor.

"Our defense has been the backbone of our success all season long, and the guys really locked in today to take away what Lane likes to do," said Benedict head coach Reggie Witherspoon. "This was a hard-fought win, and I'm proud of the way our team responded to the challenge."

With this victory, the Tigers advance to face the winner of the Morehouse College and Albany State University matchup in the SIAC quarterfinals, setting up another opportunity for HBCU basketball supremacy to be showcased.
