For my colleagues and friends who also aim to do some deep thinking, here's my personal cheat sheet: Step 1: Take a moment to turn the pages back ten years in your life · How did you get from there to where you are now? · What challenges did you have to overcome? · What unfounded fears and apprehensions held you back? · If you could go back and give yourself advice, what would you say? · Would it be helpful if you listened to that wisdom today? Step 2: Think about where you are now · What goal did you have this year that you're not chasing? · What's the worst thing that could happen if you did? · What habits or routines can you break or improve? · What excuses do you make for yourself that you need to stop making? · What are you doing well that you should you keep doing? · What do you need to do differently? · What’s really holding you back? Step 3: Hit the reset button on where you’d like to be in the future · How clearly can you visualize where you want to be 12, then 24, then 36 months from now? · If your life was a story, what chapter did you just finish, what chapter are you on and does it say at its arc? It's easier to hit targets you can see and easier to go places that been before (even if just in your own mind). This is my process for gaining perspective.
