SUNO Knights Complete Remarkable Cinderella Run to Claim HBCUAC Men's Basketball Championship

In a thrilling display of talent and determination, the Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) Knights have emerged victorious in the HBCUAC Men's Basketball Championship, defeating the Tougaloo Bulldogs in an 84-81 overtime thriller. This remarkable achievement marks the first conference championship for the SUNO men's basketball team since 2012, when they claimed the then Gulf Coast Athletic Conference (now HBCUAC) title over Tougaloo.

The Knights entered the tournament as the fourth-seed in the West division, with a 13-13 overall record for the regular season. However, this did not deter the team, as they embarked on a Cinderella run that captivated the HBCU community.

In their tournament opener, the Knights dominated Fisk with a 109-84 victory, leading for nearly the entire game. They then secured a spot in the title game with an 82-70 win in the semifinals against Philander Smith.

The championship game against the Tougaloo Bulldogs was a nail-biter from start to finish. After falling behind by eight points early in the first half, the Knights went on a 17-7 run to take their first lead of the contest.

Holding a 72-70 advantage with 1:23 remaining, the Knights committed four consecutive turnovers, allowing the Bulldogs to tie the game at 72-72 with just 23 seconds left. The game was forced into overtime, where the Knights ultimately prevailed.
