Rust Women's Basketball Claims Fourth HBCUAC Championship in Dominant Fashion

DALLAS, TX - The Rust Lady Bearcats have reasserted their dominance in HBCU women's basketball, defeating the Talladega Lady Tornadoes 67-60 to claim the 2026 HBCU Athletic Conference (HBCUAC) Women's Basketball Championship. This marks the fourth HBCUAC title for the Rust program, including a remarkable three-peat from 2022-2024 when the conference was known as the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference.

Entering the tournament as the third seed in the East division with a 15-10 regular season record, the undermanned Rust squad faced a daunting path to the championship game. However, the Bearcats refused to be deterred, winning three games in four days to reach the title showdown.

Led by the sharp-shooting of senior guard Genae Garner, Rust overwhelmed Talladega in the first half, taking a 13-point lead into the break. Garner was unconscious from beyond the arc, draining 5-of-5 three-pointers in the opening half on her way to a game-high 23 points.

Key Takeaway: The Rust Lady Bearcats' championship victory is a testament to their resilience and championship pedigree, solidifying their status as an HBCU women's basketball powerhouse.

While the Tornadoes made a strong push in the second half, cutting the deficit to just three points, Rust's free-throw shooting and defensive tenacity proved to be the difference.

The Bearcats connected on 16-of-19 free throws, compared to just 3-of-11 for Talladega.

"This team has shown so much heart and determination throughout this tournament run," said Rust head coach Tamika Catchings. "They faced adversity at every turn, but never wavered in their belief. I couldn't be prouder of this group and what they've accomplished."

The Rust Lady Bearcats' triumph is a momentous occasion for the HBCU community, as they continue to showcase the outstanding talent and coaching excellence that thrives at these historic institutions. This championship represents the culmination of years of hard work, dedication, and a relentless pursuit of excellence – values that are the foundation of the HBCU experience.

As the premier online community for HBCU alumni and supporters, HBCUConnect.com celebrates the Rust Lady Bearcats' achievement and the countless other success stories that emanate from our nation's Historically Black Colleges and Universities. This championship win is a testament to the unwavering spirit and determination that defines the HBCU community, and serves as an inspiration for all who aspire to reach the pinnacle of their respective fields.
