Hornets Soar Past Jaguars in SWAC Showdown, Boosting HBCU Pride
Posted By: Will Moss on March 04, 2026

In a thrilling SWAC showdown, the Alabama State Hornets roared past the Southern Jaguars with a nail-biting 65-63 victory on Tuesday night in Montgomery. This hard-fought win not only solidifies the Hornets' position in the conference standings but also serves as a proud moment for the entire HBCU community.

Sophomore guard Jada Simpson was the hero of the night, delivering the game-winning basket in the final seconds to lift the Hornets to victory. Simpson's driving layup through contact capped off a back-and-forth fourth quarter that saw four ties in the last five minutes, showcasing the resilience and determination of the Alabama State squad.

Key Takeaway: The Hornets' gritty performance and Simpson's clutch shot not only secured a crucial win but also demonstrated the talent and competitive spirit that HBCU programs bring to the court.

Leading the charge for the Hornets was Ajae Thompson, who poured in a game-high 18 points, while also grabbing six rebounds and recording two steals. Teammate Taylor Green added 12 points and five boards, providing a strong presence in the frontcourt. As a team, the Hornets shot an impressive 43.1% from the field and showcased their balanced scoring attack.

On the Southern side, guard Brianna Johnson shone brightly, scoring a team-high 20 points, including three 3-pointers.

Forward Mya Williams also contributed 11 points and seven rebounds, but the Jaguars' efforts fell just short in the end.

"This was a huge win for us, not just in the standings, but for the pride and spirit of our HBCU community," said Alabama State head coach Freda Freeman-Jackson. "Our players left it all on the court, and Jada's clutch play is a testament to the determination and skill of our student-athletes."

With this victory, Alabama State improves to 13-5 in SWAC play, solidifying their position as a top contender in the conference. The Hornets' grit and resilience in this showdown against Southern serve as a source of inspiration for the HBCU community, reminding us of the exceptional talent and competitive spirit that these programs consistently bring to the basketball court.

As the Hornets look ahead to their regular-season finale against Grambling State on Thursday, the HBCU faithful will be eagerly watching, ready to cheer on their team as they continue to soar and make their mark on the SWAC landscape.

HBCUConnect.com applauds the Alabama State Hornets for their thrilling victory and their unwavering commitment to representing the HBCU community with pride and excellence. Moments like these remind us of the enduring strength and spirit that define the HBCU experience, both on and off the court.
