Tennessee State University, the pride of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) community, has much to celebrate this season. Under the dynamic leadership of first-year head coach Nolan Smith, the Tigers' men's basketball team has achieved a remarkable feat - clinching a share of the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) regular season title, their first since 1995.

Coach Nolan Smith's impact on the program has been nothing short of transformative. A former All-American and NCAA Division I champion point guard at the esteemed Duke University, Smith's basketball pedigree is unquestionable. After honing his skills in the NBA and overseas, he returned to his coaching roots, making stops at prestigious programs like Louisville and Memphis before being hired to lead the Tigers.

In his inaugural season, Smith has guided the Tigers to an impressive 21 wins, the most in the program's Division I era dating back to the 1977-78 season.

This remarkable turnaround has earned Coach Smith the well-deserved honor of being named the OVC Co-Coach of the Year, sharing the award with Morehead State's Jonathan Mattox.

Key Takeaway: Nolan Smith's leadership has propelled Tennessee State to new heights, showcasing the talent and potential within HBCU basketball programs.

The Tigers' triumph is not only a testament to Coach Smith's coaching prowess but also a testament to the unwavering spirit and determination that defines the HBCU community. This achievement is a source of immense pride for the HBCU alumni, students, and supporters who have long championed the excellence of their institutions.

As the Tigers enter the OVC Tournament as the No. 1 overall seed, the HBCU faithful eagerly await their next chapter. With Coach Smith at the helm, the Tigers have proven that HBCU basketball is a force to be reckoned with, and their journey to the NCAA Tournament will undoubtedly inspire and captivate the entire HBCU community.

"Nolan Smith's success at Tennessee State is a testament to the wealth of talent and coaching expertise within the HBCU community. His leadership has reinvigorated the Tigers' program and showcased the potential for HBCU teams to thrive on the national stage. This achievement is a source of immense pride for the entire HBCU network, and we eagerly await the Tigers' continued success in the OVC Tournament and beyond."
