NFL Legend Jimmy Smith Imparts Pro-Level Wisdom at Jackson State Spring Practice

NFL Legend Jimmy Smith Imparts Pro-Level Wisdom at Jackson State Spring Practice
Posted By: Will Moss on March 05, 2026

Jackson State University, the pride of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), recently welcomed home a true HBCU legend – Jimmy Smith. The former Jacksonville Jaguars star, who was recently inducted into the Black College Football Hall of Fame, returned to his alma mater to share his expertise with the Tigers' pass-catchers during spring football workouts.

Smith's presence on the practice field was more than just a homecoming – it was a masterclass in the nuances of the wide receiver position. The JSU media team captured Smith working closely with the Tigers' receivers, breaking down the finer points of stance, route tempo, and staying low through contact.

"Those three things right there get you to the NFL."

Smith, who remains the Jaguars' all-time leader in receptions (862), receiving yards (12,287), and receiving touchdowns (67), emphasized the importance of playing with purpose, snapping routes with balance, and constantly keeping defenders on their heels.

But his impact extended beyond just the on-field instruction – he also offered to critique film and provide feedback to the players, giving them a rare chance to receive NFL-level coaching on their own turf.

Key Takeaway: By welcoming a legend like Jimmy Smith back to campus and showcasing his mentorship of JSU's receivers, the program is reinforcing its commitment to developing elite talent and providing its players with access to the highest levels of football knowledge.

This is more than just a feel-good moment for the Jackson State community – it's a strategic move by a program that has consistently demonstrated its ability to package and present HBCU football in a way that resonates with a national audience. From cinematic schedule reveals to coordinated storytelling, JSU has shown that it can compete with the biggest names in college football when it comes to content and branding.

And by having a legend like Smith impart his NFL wisdom to the next generation of Tigers, Jackson State is not only elevating its own program but also challenging the narrative that elite football knowledge is confined to Power Five schools. This moment serves as a powerful reminder that the HBCU experience can provide student-athletes with access to the same level of coaching and development as their counterparts at larger, more prominent institutions.

As the HBCU community continues to celebrate the rich tradition and unparalleled impact of Historically Black Colleges and Universities, moments like this one at Jackson State serve as a testament to the transformative power of the HBCU experience. By embracing and showcasing its connection to iconic figures like Jimmy Smith, the Tigers are not only inspiring their current players but also captivating a nationwide audience and redefining the perception of HBCU athletics.
