Tuskegee's Benjy Taylor Named SIAC Coach of the Year After Resilient Season Amid Viral Incident

In a season marked by both on-court success and off-court adversity, Tuskegee University men's basketball head coach Benjy Taylor has been named the 2026 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Coach of the Year. This well-deserved honor recognizes Taylor's remarkable leadership in guiding the Golden Tigers to a 20-win season and the No. 1 seed in the SIAC West Division, all while navigating a shocking viral incident that captivated the HBCU community.

Under Taylor's guidance, the Golden Tigers compiled an impressive 20-7 overall record, with multiple players earning All-SIAC selections. The team's star guard, Kusamae Draper, was named the SIAC Player of the Year, further testament to the program's on-court dominance.

Key Takeaway: Tuskegee's success this season is even more remarkable given the off-court challenges they faced, showcasing the resilience and character of the program.

The honor for Coach Taylor comes amid the lingering fallout from a January 31st incident, where he was handcuffed and escorted off the court by police following a loss to Morehouse College.

Video footage of the incident, which went viral on social media, showed Taylor calmly attempting to enforce conference security protocols as Morehouse football players aggressively entered the handshake line, a direct violation of SIAC rules.

"I was simply trying to get the football team out of the handshake line as they were yelling obscenities," Taylor told reporters. "It was a very dangerous situation."

Despite this shocking episode, which Taylor described as "heartbreaking" for his players and family to witness, the Golden Tigers rallied and won five of their next seven games to surge up the SIAC standings with a 19-5 conference record.
