PlayVS and Urban One Partner to Elevate HBCU Esports Community
|
Posted By: Will Moss on March 06, 2026 In a groundbreaking move that is sure to excite the HBCU community, PlayVS and Urban One have announced a landmark three-year partnership to establish a dedicated competitive gaming environment for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). This innovative collaboration, unveiled during Black History Month, will create the first-of-its-kind national esports league exclusively for HBCU students. By combining Urban One's vast media reach, which connects with over 80 million monthly users, and PlayVS' established competitive gaming platform used by schools across North America, this initiative promises to provide unparalleled access, visibility, and long-term opportunities for HBCU students interested in the thriving world of gaming, technology, and media. Key Takeaway: This partnership reflects the growing recognition of the immense talent and influence of Black gamers, who currently represent only about 5% of the gaming industry's workforce. The HBCU Esports Community aims to address this gap by creating a dedicated platform for HBCU students to showcase their skills and pursue careers in the rapidly evolving gaming and technology sectors.
The rollout of the National HBCU Esports Community will occur in phases over the next two years. During the spring and summer of 2026, PlayVS will actively engage with HBCU institutions while also promoting collegiate esports opportunities through its nationwide K-12 gaming network. This strategic approach is designed to strengthen the pipeline from high school esports programs into HBCU enrollment. In the fall of 2026, participating HBCU schools will have the opportunity to compete in PlayVS College League competitions, as well as a series of HBCU-focused invitational events. These initiatives are aimed at building visibility and competitive momentum within the HBCU esports community. The first official season of the league is scheduled to launch in the spring of 2027. "For our students, esports is more than just competition; it's a gateway to technology, media, and leadership," said Jaden Roberts, president of Howard University's Esports Association. "This partnership also reflects the cultural ties between the organizations involved, noting Urban One's historical connection to Howard through founder Cathy Hughes." As part of the partnership, Urban One will leverage its extensive media platforms, including television networks, radio stations, digital outlets, and nationally syndicated programming, to promote the league and the participating HBCU students. The coverage will go beyond just competition results, with a focus on highlighting campus life, student leadership, and the vibrant HBCU experience. Expanding Opportunities and Fostering ConnectionsThis initiative is designed to create long-term pathways for HBCU students to pursue careers in the rapidly growing esports and gaming industry. By connecting PlayVS' existing K-12 esports ecosystem with HBCU institutions, the partnership aims to establish a seamless transition for students to continue their competitive gaming pursuits at the collegiate level while also exploring opportunities in related fields such as technology, media, and entrepreneurship. Christopher Turner, esports program director at Southern University, expressed his excitement about the partnership, stating, "As pioneers in the collegiate space, Southern University EDGE is excited to join forces with PlayVS and Urban One. This partnership bridges the gap between competitive gaming and the vibrant culture of HBCUs, giving our students a national stage to showcase their skills." Originally reported by HBCU Sports.
