|
Posted By: Roger Gates on March 06, 2026 North Carolina Central University's men's tennis team will be honored with highway signs by the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) in recognition of their HBCU championship victory, the university announced. The commemorative highway signs will celebrate the Eagles' achievement in capturing the HBCU tennis championship, marking a significant milestone for the Durham-based institution's athletic program. The recognition from NCDOT represents a prestigious honor that will provide lasting visibility for the team's accomplishment to travelers throughout the region. Key Takeaway: North Carolina Central University's men's tennis championship will be permanently recognized with highway signs installed by the state's Department of Transportation, bringing statewide visibility to the Eagles' historic achievement. North Carolina Central University, a member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), continues to build its reputation for athletic excellence alongside its strong academic programs. The university, founded in 1910, has been a pillar of higher education in Durham and throughout North Carolina for more than a century. The highway sign initiative represents a collaboration between NCCU Athletics and the state transportation department to celebrate achievements by North Carolina universities. These commemorative signs serve as both a point of pride for the institution and inspiration for current and future student-athletes. The men's tennis program's championship adds to NCCU's growing list of athletic accomplishments and demonstrates the university's commitment to competitive excellence across multiple sports. The recognition also highlights the achievements of HBCU athletic programs on a broader stage, bringing increased attention to the talent and dedication of student-athletes at historically Black institutions. Details regarding the specific locations where the highway signs will be installed and the timeline for their unveiling have not yet been announced. The signs are expected to be positioned along major roadways in areas with high visibility to maximize recognition of the team's achievement. This honor reflects the state of North Carolina's tradition of celebrating the successes of its public universities and recognizing the contributions of HBCUs to the educational and athletic landscape of the state.
