Grambling State University Wins Federal Trademark for Iconic 'G' Logo After 30-Year Legal Battle

Grambling State University Wins Federal Trademark for Iconic
Posted By: Will Moss on March 07, 2026

Grambling State University (GSU) has achieved a significant legal and branding victory, securing federal trademark registration for its legendary "G" styled logo after a 30-year legal battle. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office granted the registration under U.S. Trademark Registration No. 8148992, protecting one of the most recognizable logos in collegiate athletics.

The historic trademark win positions the Louisiana HBCU to confidently expand partnerships, merchandise opportunities, and national visibility initiatives while reinforcing the university's exclusive rights to use and license the mark. The registration comes after decades of navigating trademark considerations alongside the University of Georgia Bulldogs and the NFL's Green Bay Packers, both of which use similar "G" logos.

Key Takeaway: This federal trademark registration strengthens Grambling State's ability to protect its brand identity, expand licensing opportunities, and generate revenue through merchandise partnerships—critical resources for institutional advancement.

Legacy and Symbolism

Grambling's logo carries deep historical significance, paying tribute to alumnus and Packers legend Willie Davis, known as one of the most dominant defensive ends in NFL history and a star of the Packers' legendary 1960s teams. The Grambling Tigers introduced their own version of the "G" logo in the 1970s after receiving permission to use a similar design, maintaining clear distinctions through the university's bold black-and-gold color scheme.

Dr.

Martin Lemelle Jr.
, GSU's president, emphasized the broader implications of the achievement beyond legal victory.

This registration represents more than a legal achievement, it is a declaration of ownership over our history, our excellence, and our brand.

Dr. Lemelle credited the collaborative efforts of Penya Moses, Grambling's vice president for administration and business affairs, and external counsel Kean Miller for ensuring "our university's interests were advanced with clarity and confidence."

Strategic Brand Management

Moses, whom Lemelle refers to as "VP Moses," outlined the strategic importance of the federal registration for the university's future.

Securing federal registration only strengthens our ability to protect the mark, expand licensing opportunities, and steward the University's brand with integrity for years to come.

She explained that the trademark process involved "working alongside Kean Miller and engaging constructively with peer institutions" to demonstrate "the distinctiveness and legacy of Grambling State University's 'G' as a symbol that has represented Tiger pride for generations."

Moses praised "the professionalism of our counterparts in helping establish clear boundaries that allow each institution's mark to stand on its own," noting the collaborative approach that ultimately led to success.

The trademark victory represents a significant milestone for Grambling State as HBCUs increasingly focus on protecting their intellectual property and building sustainable revenue streams through strategic brand management and corporate partnerships.
