Morehouse-Tuskegee Rivalry Reignites Controversy at SIAC Championship

Morehouse-Tuskegee Rivalry Reignites Controversy at SIAC Championship
Posted By: Will Moss on March 08, 2026

MORROW, Ga. - The highly anticipated SIAC men's basketball championship between Morehouse College and Tuskegee University was already charged with emotion, but ESPN's decision to replay the controversial Benjy Taylor handcuffing incident further ignited tensions between these two storied HBCU programs.

As the game tipped off, with Tuskegee leading 10-8 and 15:06 remaining in the first half, ESPN unexpectedly aired the footage from the viral postgame scene that unfolded on February 1st at Forbes Arena in Atlanta. In that incident, Tuskegee head coach Benjy Taylor was briefly detained in handcuffs following a heated matchup between the rivals.

Key Takeaway: The replay of the controversial handcuffing incident reignited tensions between the two HBCU basketball powerhouses, underscoring the lasting impact of this unresolved conflict on the conference and its passionate fan bases.

As the clip played on the arena's jumbotron, Morehouse Athletic Director Harold Ellis immediately stood up from his courtside seat and confronted the ESPN broadcast team, objecting to the decision to air the sensitive footage. Moments later, Tuskegee President Dr. Mark A. Brown also approached the broadcast area, further emphasizing the gravity of the situation.

The handcuffing incident remains an open wound for both Morehouse and Tuskegee. Morehouse President F.

DuBois Bowman
has previously acknowledged the "unfortunate incident" and stated that the detainment "did not reflect the desires that we have for Morehouse." Meanwhile, Tuskegee officials have maintained that the postgame handshake line was disrupted when non-participants entered the floor, leading to the security intervention.

As the game continued, the on-court action reflected the intensity of the rivalry, with Morehouse building a first-half lead that reached 14 points. However, Tuskegee steadied itself and closed the period on top, taking a 33-24 lead into halftime.

"The rivalry's most talked-about moment was still hovering over the floor, and now, directly over the broadcast."

HBCUConnect Perspective: A Lasting Impact on the SIAC Community

The Morehouse-Tuskegee rivalry has long been a source of pride and passion for the HBCU community, but the unresolved handcuffing incident has left a lasting impact. As the two programs battle for conference supremacy on the court, the lingering tensions off the court serve as a poignant reminder of the challenges faced by HBCU student-athletes and coaches. HBCUConnect commends the leadership of both institutions for their efforts to address this sensitive matter, and we call upon the SIAC to facilitate an open and transparent dialogue that brings closure and healing to the community. The HBCU experience is built upon a rich legacy of resilience and unity, and it is crucial that these ideals are upheld, even in the face of adversity.
