FAMU Alumnus Common Brings HBCU Pride to NBA Broadcast
|
Posted By: Will Moss on March 08, 2026 In the early 1990s, before he won his first Grammy and became widely known as Common, Lonnie Rashid Lynn was a Florida A&M University (FAMU) Rattler. Now considered one of the best lyricists to ever grace the hip-hop conversation, Common walked the hallowed halls of the highest of seven hills in Tallahassee, honing his skills and emerging as one of the all-time great wordsmiths. Common's lasting connection to FAMU is evident, as he often spoke about the influence of the legendary Marching "100" during his time as a Rattler. When asked to produce a song for Prime Video's NBA broadcasts, the opportunity to integrate the Marching "100" into the fold was always on his mind. Key Takeaway: Common's collaboration with the Marching "100" on the NBA on Prime theme song marks the first national NBA broadcast theme created by three Black composers, showcasing the exceptional talent and artistry found within the HBCU community.
The chance arose, and Common secured the Marching "100" for a promo that aired on March 7th, preceding the Orlando Magic vs. Minnesota Timberwolves game. The band performed "Victory," the official theme for NBA on Prime, which was composed by Common, a three-time Grammy Award-winning artist and fellow FAMU alumnus, alongside acclaimed musicians and composers Karriem Riggins and three-time Grammy Award winner James Poyser. "You can get to anywhere from FAMU," said Marvin Green Jr., Common's fellow Chicago native and FAMU classmate who now works at the FAMU Foundation. "Common walked the hills of Florida A&M University. As the Marching "100" played the theme song while performing formations on the floor of the Al Lawson Center, Common's voice was layered over the performance, expressing his enduring connection to the HBCU institution. "I'm a Rattler for life," Common said. "And when I came down from Chicago, it was always about y'all (Marching 100). Y'all were our pride, man, so I just heard some of the rehearsals and I was like, 'man, it started giving me chills.'" The promo featured strategic shots from across the FAMU campus, including the main quadrangle, Polkinghorne dorm, and the band building, showcasing the university's vibrant spirit and legacy. Common's involvement in the NBA on Prime theme song is a testament to the exceptional talent and creativity that thrives within the HBCU community. As an alumnus, he has leveraged his platform to shine a spotlight on the Marching "100" and the rich heritage of FAMU, inspiring pride and recognition for the university's enduring impact on the arts and entertainment industry.
