Tennessee State Tigers Storm to OVC Championship, Earning Historic NCAA Bid
Posted By: Will Moss on March 08, 2026

Nashville, TN - The Tennessee State Tigers men's basketball team made history this past weekend, dominating the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) championship game with a decisive 93-67 victory over Morehead State. In a record-setting performance, the Tigers never trailed and showcased their offensive prowess, sinking an astounding 16 out of 26 three-pointers.

This triumphant win marks the Tigers' first OVC tournament championship since 1994, earning them a long-awaited berth in the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament. The significance of this achievement cannot be overstated, as it represents a major milestone for the Historically Black College and University (HBCU) community.

Key Takeaway: Tennessee State's OVC championship victory not only showcases the talent and determination of their student-athletes but also serves as a powerful representation of the excellence and promise that HBCUs continue to demonstrate on the national stage.

Leading the charge for the Tigers was Travis Harper, who went a perfect 5-for-5 from downtown in the first half. The sharp-shooting performance set the tone early, as Tennessee State built a comfortable lead and never looked back.

Forwards Antoine Lorick III and Carlous Williams also made significant contributions, scoring 18 and 16 points, respectively.

OVC Player of the Year Aaron Nkrumah and point guard Dante Harris provided the necessary playmaking and leadership, with Nkrumah recording 14 points and 6 assists, and Harris logging a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds.

"This championship is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our team. We're excited to represent Tennessee State and the HBCU community on the national stage in the NCAA tournament."

The Tigers' dominant performance in the OVC championship game not only set new records for the conference but also showcased the depth and talent of the HBCU basketball programs. As the premier online community for HBCU alumni and supporters, HBCUConnect.com is thrilled to celebrate this historic achievement and the continued success of Tennessee State University athletics.

With their NCAA tournament bid secured, the Tennessee State Tigers will now set their sights on making a deep run in the Big Dance, further elevating the profile of HBCUs and inspiring the next generation of student-athletes to reach for their dreams.
