Shining on the National Stage: HBCU Women's Basketball Teams Earn Historic NCAA Tournament Bids

Shining on the National Stage: HBCU Women
Posted By: Will Moss on March 09, 2026

The HBCU community is abuzz with excitement as four remarkable women's basketball programs from Historically Black Colleges and Universities have earned their place in the 2026 NCAA Division II Tournament. This unprecedented achievement showcases the exceptional talent and dedication of student-athletes from the CIAA (Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association) and SIAC (Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference), who will represent their institutions on the national stage.

Winston-Salem State, Fayetteville State, Miles College, and Edward Waters University have all secured bids to the prestigious NCAA Division II Tournament, demonstrating the continued growth and prominence of HBCU women's basketball at the highest level of collegiate competition.

Key Takeaway: The selection of four HBCU women's basketball teams to the NCAA Division II Tournament underscores the remarkable achievements and competitiveness of these programs, which have consistently produced winning seasons and postseason appearances in recent years.

Powering Through the South Region

The NCAA South Region will feature two HBCU representatives, each with a compelling story. Miles College, the No. 4 seed, will face off against the No. 5 seed, Nova Southeastern, in what promises to be an intensely competitive first-round matchup. The Golden Bears of Miles College, with their impressive 25-6 record, will look to make their mark on the national stage.

Joining Miles College in the South Region is Edward Waters University, the No. 8 seed, who will take on the formidable No. 1 seed, Alabama-Huntsville.

Despite the challenging opponent, Edward Waters' selection underscores the growing national recognition for SIAC programs and the exceptional seasons produced by HBCU teams.

CIAA Powerhouses in the Atlantic Region

The Atlantic Region bracket also boasts strong HBCU representation, led by the CIAA contenders Winston-Salem State and Fayetteville State.

Winston-Salem State, the No. 3 seed, has been one of the most consistent programs in the region this season, posting an impressive 26-3 record. The Rams will face the No. 6 seed, Glenville State, as they look to translate their regular-season success onto the national stage.

Fayetteville State, the No. 5 seed, will also represent the CIAA in the Atlantic Region. The Broncos, who finished the season at 21-5, will open tournament play against the No. 4 seed, Seton Hill, with the opportunity to showcase their talent and make a deep postseason run.

"The presence of multiple HBCU teams across the NCAA Division II bracket highlights the competitive level of Black college women's basketball. Programs from the CIAA and SIAC have consistently produced winning seasons and postseason appearances in recent years, and the 2026 NCAA tournament field reflects that continued growth."

HBCUConnect's Perspective: The selection of four HBCU women's basketball teams to the prestigious NCAA Division II Tournament is a testament to the unwavering dedication, exceptional talent, and unparalleled determination of these student-athletes. This achievement not only showcases the exceptional caliber of HBCU women's basketball but also serves as a source of immense pride and inspiration for the entire HBCU community. As these teams take the national stage, they will inspire generations of young athletes to pursue their dreams and continue the legacy of excellence that HBCU programs have established. The HBCU community will be cheering loudly, eager to witness these trailblazers make their mark on the national tournament and demonstrate the unparalleled strength of HBCU athletics.
