SWAC Women's Basketball Tournament: HBCU Heavyweights Clash for NCAA Bid
|
Posted By: Roger The Great on March 09, 2026 ATLANTA, GA - The Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Women's Basketball Tournament is upon us, and the stakes couldn't be higher for the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) competing for the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Arriving at the Gateway Center Arena as the undisputed No. 1 seed and regular-season champion, Alabama A&M is the team to beat. The Bulldogs boast an impressive 17-1 conference record and have been dominant on the defensive end, holding opponents under 55 points in eight consecutive games. Key Takeaway: Alabama A&M's near-perfect regular season has established them as the favorite, but the tournament's single-elimination format leaves the door open for upsets from hungry challengers.
Nipping at the Bulldogs' heels are a trio of contenders: Alcorn State (14-4), Alabama State (12-6), and Southern (12-6). These teams have proven they can match Alabama A&M's intensity and will be looking to dethrone the regular-season champs. Fans can also keep an eye on Grambling State (No. 6 seed, 10-8) and their dominant forward Shaniah Nun, the conference's leading rebounder. Her presence in the paint could pose problems for Alabama A&M's defense. Lower-seeded teams like Prairie View A&M (No. 12 seed, 0-18) will be fighting for their lives in the early rounds, but their underdog spirit could inject some early chaos into an already tight bracket. "This tournament is sure to be a thrilling showcase of the talent and tenacity within SWAC women's basketball," said HBCUConnect.com Editor-in-Chief. "The conference's top teams have proven their mettle throughout the regular season, and now the stage is set for an epic battle to secure the NCAA Tournament berth that every HBCU program covets." With the action tipping off on Monday, March 9th, HBCU basketball fans across the nation will be tuning in to see which squad emerges victorious and earns the right to represent the SWAC in the Big Dance. The championship game is scheduled for March 14th at 1 p.m., and the excitement is palpable as these HBCU powerhouses clash for a spot in the NCAA Tournament. Originally reported by HBCU Sports.
