Chicago-bred recording artist Common brought national spotlight to his alma mater, Florida A&M University, when he collaborated with the legendary Marching "100" to recreate the official "Victory" theme song for NBA on Prime's broadcast on March 7. The performance aired during the opening of the Orlando Magic vs. Minnesota Timberwolves contest, showcasing FAMU's musical excellence on a major national sports platform.

The collaboration marks a significant moment in broadcast history, as the "Victory" theme was composed by Common alongside Karriem Riggins and three-time Grammy Award winner James Poyser. According to HBCU Gameday, this represents the first time that three Black composers created a national NBA broadcast theme, breaking new ground in sports media representation.

Historic First: This collaboration marks the first time three Black composers have created a national NBA broadcast theme, with Common, Karriem Riggins, and three-time Grammy winner James Poyser leading the creative vision.

The promotional video showcases the Marching "100" practicing and performing on FAMU's basketball court, with various outdoor scenes highlighting the university's campus.

Band members are shown preparing their instruments before launching into the powerful "Victory" performance, while students share their goals and dreams of attending the historic institution.

Common, who attended FAMU from 1991 to 1992, expressed deep emotional connection to the university and its renowned marching band during the production. In the video, his voice emphasizes his lifelong commitment to the FAMU community.

"I'm a Rattler for life. And when I came down from Chicago, it was always about y'all (Marching 100). Y'all were our pride, man, so I just heard some of the rehearsals, and I was like, man, it started giving me chills."

The broadcast feature provides valuable national exposure for FAMU, positioning the university and its world-famous marching band before millions of NBA viewers. The video's narrator highlights Common's enrollment at the school in the early 1990s, using his successful career trajectory as inspiration for current and prospective students to pursue their dreams while carrying forward the FAMU legacy.

This partnership demonstrates the growing recognition of HBCU cultural contributions in mainstream media and entertainment. By featuring student voices discussing their aspirations and showcasing the Marching "100's" musical prowess, the collaboration reinforces FAMU's reputation as a premier institution for both academic excellence and cultural impact.

The Marching "100" has long been considered one of the nation's most prestigious collegiate marching bands, and this national platform further cements their status as ambassadors for HBCU excellence in the performing arts.
