ATLANTA - The Grambling State Tigers opened the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Men's Basketball Tournament with an emphatic statement, crushing the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils by a score of 77-52 on Monday night at the Gateway Center Arena in College Park, Georgia.

Displaying their sharpshooting prowess, the Tigers connected on a season-high 13 three-pointers, shooting an impressive 54.2% from beyond the arc. Led by Jamil Muttilib's 22 points and five triples, Grambling State showcased its offensive firepower and left no doubt about their readiness to compete in the SWAC Tournament.

Key Takeaway: Grambling State's dominant performance in the tournament opener demonstrated the team's ability to excel in the postseason, which is crucial for the HBCU community as they cheer on their Tigers to make a deep run and potentially secure an NCAA Tournament berth.

The Tigers' bench also played a significant role, outscoring the Delta Devils' reserves by a margin of 32-24. Derrius Ward (15 points, 7 assists) and Mekhi Fitts (9 points, 3-for-3 shooting) provided valuable contributions off the bench, showcasing the depth and versatility of the Grambling State squad.

While Michael James led the Delta Devils with a game-high 23 points, the majority of his production came after the game was already decided.

Grambling State's stifling defense kept James in check for much of the contest, underscoring the team's ability to adapt and neutralize the opposition's top threats.

"Our guys came out with a sense of urgency and purpose tonight," said Grambling State head coach Donte' Jackson. "We executed our game plan to perfection, and I'm proud of the way the team stepped up and delivered a complete performance."

The victory propels Grambling State to the next round of the SWAC Tournament, where they will face the Jackson State Tigers on Wednesday night. This matchup between two HBCU powerhouses is sure to captivate the attention of the entire HBCU community, as they rally behind their respective teams in pursuit of conference glory and a potential NCAA Tournament bid.
