Historic Moment for Morgan State Wrestling at EIWA Championships
|
Posted By: Roger The Great on March 10, 2026 The historic journey of the Morgan State University wrestling program reached new heights as they made a statement at the 122nd Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) Championships. Eugene Harney etched his name in the record books by becoming the first EIWA champion in Morgan State's wrestling history. The No. 1 seed at 149 pounds, Harney powered his way through the tournament, defeating Riley Bower of Bucknell 6-5 in the thrilling final to secure his spot at the prestigious NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. Key Takeaway: Harney's historic EIWA title win not only marks a significant milestone for the Morgan State program, but it also showcases the talent and determination of HBCU wrestlers competing at the highest level of collegiate wrestling.
Joining Harney in the NCAA tournament will be teammate Yannis Charles, who made an impressive run to the 157-pound final. Although he was unable to compete in the championship match due to an injury sustained in the semifinals, Charles' second-place finish earned him an automatic bid to the national championships. The Bears' success at the EIWA Championships is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the coaching staff, led by head coach Kenny Monday. Monday, a former Olympic gold medalist, has been instrumental in elevating the Morgan State wrestling program and providing opportunities for HBCU athletes to compete at the highest level. "This is a historic moment for our program and for HBCU wrestling as a whole," said Monday. "Eugene and Yannis have shown the world that HBCU athletes can compete and succeed at the national level. We're excited to represent Morgan State and the HBCU community at the NCAA Championships." The success of Morgan State wrestling at the EIWA Championships is a testament to the growing strength of HBCU athletics and the impact they are having on the broader collegiate sports landscape. As the only HBCU competing in Division I wrestling, the Bears' achievements serve as an inspiration to aspiring HBCU athletes and a reminder of the immense talent and potential within the HBCU community. HBCUConnect's Perspective: The historic performances of Eugene Harney and Yannis Charles at the EIWA Championships showcase the excellence and determination of HBCU student-athletes. Their success not only brings pride to the Morgan State community but also highlights the growing influence of HBCUs in the world of collegiate sports. This achievement serves as a powerful reminder of the immense talent and potential that exists within the HBCU ecosystem, and it inspires future generations of HBCU athletes to pursue their dreams on the national stage.
