Uniting the HBCU Community: Navigating Challenging Times with Resilience and Purpose

Uniting the HBCU Community: Navigating Challenging Times with Resilience and Purpose
Posted By: Will Moss on March 10, 2026

In the ever-evolving landscape of collegiate sports, the HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) community has found itself at the forefront of complex and thought-provoking discussions. As a sports journalist writing for HBCUConnect.com, the premier online community for HBCU alumni and supporters, I aim to shed light on the significance of these recent events and their impact on our beloved institutions.

Last week, two of the HBCU community's most renowned institutions, Howard University and Florida A&M University, made headlines for their respective stances on controversial issues. While the decisions made by these institutions may have stirred up emotions and debate, it is crucial that we approach these matters with a deeper understanding of the challenges and nuances faced by HBCUs.

Key Takeaway: HBCUs must navigate a delicate balance between upholding their values, advocating for their communities, and maintaining the financial resources necessary to fulfill their educational mission.

The announcement by Howard University to forbid its sports teams from kneeling during the national anthem has sparked a wave of discussion. While the university cites its $90 million grant from the Air Force as a contributing factor, this decision raises important questions about the autonomy and freedom of expression for HBCU student-athletes. As the cradle of Black excellence, HBCUs have long been at the forefront of the fight for civil rights and social justice. Restricting this form of peaceful protest could be seen as a compromise of the very principles that these institutions have championed.

On the other hand, Florida A&M University men's basketball coach Charlie Ward made the decision to attend a roundtable discussion hosted by President Donald Trump.

While Ward's intention may have been to advocate for increased funding and support for HBCUs, his appearance at an event associated with an administration that has often been perceived as indifferent to the challenges faced by the HBCU community has raised eyebrows. As the son of FAMU Rattlers, Ward's actions highlight the delicate balancing act that HBCU leaders must navigate in order to secure resources and maintain their institutional integrity.

"The basis of this country's birth is revolution. Colonists tripped out over the price of tea and declared independence. When are we going to realize we've been taxed far too much for far too long and do something about it?"

These incidents underscore the urgent need for HBCU leaders to stand firm in their commitment to their communities, while also strategically navigating the complex web of political, financial, and social pressures that often threaten to undermine their autonomy. HBCUs have a long and storied history of empowering marginalized communities, fostering academic excellence, and cultivating the next generation of Black leaders. It is imperative that they remain steadfast in their mission, even when faced with difficult choices.

HBCUConnect's Perspective: As the premier online community for HBCU alumni and supporters, HBCUConnect.com recognizes the immense importance of these institutions in shaping the lives of countless individuals and the collective strength of the Black community. While the recent events at Howard University and Florida A&M University may be complex, we firmly believe that HBCUs must continue to be bastions of unwavering principle, bold advocacy, and unapologetic celebration of Black identity. By standing united and embracing their revolutionary spirit, HBCUs can navigate these challenging times and emerge stronger, more resilient, and more determined than ever to fulfill their vital role in empowering the HBCU community.
