Morehouse Basketball's Championship Glory Inspires HBCU Community

Morehouse Basketball
Posted By: Will Moss on March 11, 2026

In a triumphant display of HBCU excellence, the Morehouse College Maroon Tigers basketball team claimed the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) championship, ending a 23-year drought and earning a coveted spot in the NCAA Tournament.

This remarkable achievement is a testament to the bold vision and leadership of Morehouse Athletic Director Harold Ellis, a former NBA veteran who made the tough decision to chart a new course for the program. Hiring Larry Dixon as the 14th head coach in May 2025, Ellis sought to elevate Morehouse's basketball ambitions and unlock the team's full potential.

Key Takeaway: Morehouse's championship triumph represents the triumph of HBCU excellence, where academic prestige and athletic ambition coexist in perfect harmony.

Coach Dixon wasted no time in setting the tone, making it clear that his sights were set on hanging championship banners every year. "When I took over, because it's just a belief in myself and the system," Dixon said. "And I told our guys, Morehouse is too good of a brand academically to go 23 years because you can get the best of both worlds."

The team's journey was not without its challenges, but the players' unwavering commitment to Dixon's vision proved to be the catalyst for their success. "Jermonte Hill and Sincere [Moore] started to buy in. And when they bought in, we took another level," Dixon noted.

The championship game against Tuskegee University was a display of Morehouse's dominance, as the Maroon Tigers shot an impressive 48% from the field and hit 10 three-pointers, leading for nearly 32 minutes of the contest.

Josiah Lawson scored 17 points, while Sincere Moore, JerMontae Hill, and Sincere Key all reached double figures.

"I am so proud of my team. They fought all year. They prepared for it. And consistent. Coach Dixon empowered all the young men... and we got it done here. And as I said, championship number one, baby."

Ellis' words speak volumes about the significance of this triumph for the Morehouse community and the HBCU landscape as a whole. This championship is not just a single accomplishment, but rather the foundation for a new era of sustained excellence and ambition.

For the HBCU community, Morehouse's championship victory serves as a powerful reminder of the talent, dedication, and unwavering spirit that thrives within these institutions. It is a testament to the transformative power of HBCU athletics, where student-athletes not only excel on the court but also embody the values of academic excellence and community engagement that define the HBCU experience.

As Morehouse looks ahead to the NCAA Tournament, the HBCU community stands united in its support, eager to witness the continued rise of this storied program and the countless others that strive to reach similar heights. This championship triumph is more than just a sports story; it is a celebration of the enduring legacy and bright future of HBCUs across the nation.
