Jackson State Grinds Out Gutsy SWAC Tournament Win, Showcasing HBCU Resilience

Jackson State Grinds Out Gutsy SWAC Tournament Win, Showcasing HBCU Resilience
Posted By: Will Moss on March 11, 2026

The Jackson State Tigers faced a tough challenge in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Tournament, but they refused to back down. Despite missing their SWAC Player of the Year, Daeshun Ruffin, the Tigers gritted out a thrilling 68-65 victory over the Grambling State Tigers, showcasing the resilience and determination that has become the hallmark of HBCU basketball programs.

A Collective Effort Seals the Victory

In a back-and-forth battle at the Gateway Center, it was the unsung hero, Dorian McMillian, who stepped up and delivered a clutch performance off the bench. The sophomore guard, who had been limited by injury in recent weeks, exploded for 15 crucial points in the second half, including three pivotal 3-pointers that kept the Tigers in the game.

Head coach Mo Williams praised McMillian's contribution, saying, "I needed him to step up. That's why I went to him early in the second half. As a coach, you can only put them in position. It's up to the player to be prepared and want to make winning plays."

"We're back in the (SWAC) tournament after losing in the championship game last season. So this year, we're not doing that."

The Tigers also received a stellar performance from Jalen Tatum, who scored a game-high 18 points and dished out 4 assists in a season-high 36 minutes of play.

Tatum's clutch driving layup in the final seconds sealed the victory for the Tigers.

Key Takeaway: The Jackson State Tigers' gritty performance in the SWAC Tournament, without their star player, demonstrates the resilience and depth that are hallmarks of HBCU basketball programs. Their ability to rally together and make winning plays when it mattered most is a testament to the spirit and determination that drives these student-athletes.

As the Tigers prepare to face off against Florida A&M in the SWAC Tournament quarterfinals, the HBCU community can take pride in the team's perseverance and their refusal to be deterred by adversity. This kind of grit and teamwork is what makes HBCU sports such an inspiring part of the broader collegiate athletics landscape.

HBCUConnect.com Perspective: The Jackson State Tigers' hard-fought victory in the SWAC Tournament is a shining example of the resilience and determination that define HBCU sports programs. Despite facing significant challenges, the Tigers rallied together, with unsung heroes stepping up to the plate, to secure a crucial win that keeps their championship aspirations alive. This kind of collective effort and heart-driven play is what makes HBCU athletics so special and inspiring to the entire HBCU community. As the Tigers continue their tournament run, the HBCU faithful will be cheering them on, proud of the way they have represented the values and spirit of Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
