The 1868 Legacy XIV Collection: Wearable Legacy

The 1868 Legacy XIV Collection: Wearable Legacy
Posted By: Sherry Snipes on March 12, 2026

For more than 150 years, Historically Black Colleges and Universities have long stood as pillars of opportunity, leadership, and cultural pride. Founded during one of the most transformative periods in American history, HBCUs were created to educate and empower generations at a time when access to higher education was largely denied to African Americans. Our institutions have produced scholars, innovators, entrepreneurs, public servants, and community leaders whose influence extends far beyond campus gates.

The story of the 1868 Legacy XIV Collection begins with that legacy.

Many of the earliest HBCUs emerged during the Reconstruction era, a period that also saw one of the most important constitutional developments in American history: the ratification of the 14th Amendment in 1868. The amendment established birthright citizenship and guaranteed equal protection under the law to all persons—principles intended to secure the rights of formerly enslaved people and that later helped lay the foundation for expanded educational access, civil rights, and voting rights in the generations that followed.

The name 1868 Legacy reflects the year the 14th Amendment was ratified, while XIV represents the amendment itself.

Together they symbolize progress, dignity, and the enduring legacy carried forward through generations of scholars, leaders, and graduates shaped by HBCU communities.

1868 Legacy XIV reflects that historic moment and the collection was created to celebrate that heritage.

The 1868 XIV Collection features timeless pieces including heritage cardigans, elevated crewnecks, women’s knitwear, pashminas, and classic accessories. Each item carries the 1868 Legacy crest and reflects a design philosophy rooted in tradition, pride, and understated sophistication.

For many of us connected to HBCUs—as alumni, supporters, or members of the broader community—these institutions represent more than education. They represent identity, resilience, and a legacy of excellence that continues to influence generations.

Built with intention, the XIV Collection is introduced through a preorder model with a limited order window and early-access pricing. Each piece will be produced in limited quantities—ensuring exceptional quality while supporting sustainability and allowing the brand to grow thoughtfully.

If you believe in honoring history while moving forward with purpose, the invitation is simple:

Wear the Legacy.
