Posted By: Will Moss on March 13, 2026 The postseason isn't over yet for eight HBCU basketball programs heading to Petersburg, Virginia, for the second annual Black College Invitational Championship (BCIC). Set for March 26-29 at the Virginia State University Multipurpose Center, the tournament offers teams that missed NCAA Tournament berths another opportunity to compete for a championship title. Key Takeaway: The BCIC provides a meaningful postseason stage for HBCU programs to extend their seasons, gain additional exposure, and compete for a national-style championship after strong seasons that fell short of NCAA Tournament qualification. Men's Tournament Features Competitive FieldFour programs will battle for the men's championship, representing a cross-section of HBCU athletic excellence. The men's bracket includes:
The semifinal matchups are set for Friday evening, with Bluefield State facing Central State in one game, while host Virginia State meets Edward Waters in the other. The winners will advance to the championship round. Central State and Edward Waters enter the tournament with experienced rosters capable of making deep runs, while Virginia State will enjoy the considerable advantage of competing in front of their home crowd at the Multipurpose Center. Women's Competition Equally CompellingThe women's side of the bracket features four programs equally hungry for postseason glory. The semifinal matchups include:
Bowie State enters as one of the most accomplished programs in the field following another strong CIAA season. Benedict and Central State also bring competitive resumes that add intrigue to the women's bracket. Like their men's counterparts, Virginia State's women will look to capitalize on home-court energy as they pursue the championship. Growing Postseason Alternative for HBCU BasketballThe BCIC was created specifically to provide a postseason alternative for HBCU basketball programs whose seasons might otherwise end after conference tournaments. Similar to other postseason invitationals across college basketball, the event allows teams to gain additional exposure and provides players with more competitive opportunities while keeping momentum building for their programs. With eight teams competing and multiple conferences represented, the BCIC continues establishing itself as an emerging fixture within the HBCU basketball landscape. For these participating programs, it represents one more chance to end the season on a high note—and bring home a championship trophy. Originally reported by HBCU Gameday.
