Posted By: Will Moss on March 13, 2026 The stage is set for an impressive showing of HBCU athletic excellence as 15 talented athletes from across our institutions prepare to compete in the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships, which began today. The two-day championship event features nine men and six women representing the best of HBCU track and field talent. Key Takeaway: Four HBCU athletes will compete in the men's long jump, while three of our women's athletes have qualified for the 60m hurdles, showcasing the depth of talent across our institutions.
Long Jump DominanceThe men's long jump field features an HBCU-rich lineup led by Benedict senior Zack Washington, whose personal-best mark of 7.70m ranks second-best in Division II this season. Washington claimed his second consecutive SIAC Indoor Championship and dominated at last weekend's HBCU Championships with a 7.35m jump, beating the second-place finisher by .37 meters. Joining Washington are three fellow HBCU competitors: Jamarri Norman of Allen, who posted a season-best 7.50m (seventh-best in Division II); Dimetri Browne of Lincoln (MO), returning after missing the 2025 season; and Virginia State junior Kwame Whitaker, making his first Indoor Nationals appearance. Hurdles Heating UpVirginia Union sophomore Antonio Smith enters the men's 60m hurdles with the eighth-fastest time in the country at 7.88 seconds, making him one of only nine Division II athletes to run faster than 7.9 seconds this season. Smith claimed his second straight CIAA championship and helped Virginia Union secure their first team track & field conference championship in nearly a century. Lincoln (MO) freshman Brandon Harris looks to add to his growing trophy collection after running a season-best 7.95 seconds at the Great Lakes Valley Conference championships. He's one of only three freshmen competing in the men's 60m hurdle field. On the women's side, three HBCU athletes will battle in the 60m hurdles:
Middle Distance and Field EventsClaflin senior Jaevon Riley returns to Indoor Nationals in the 400m with a season-best time of 46.42 seconds, tied for fifth-best in the country. Riley claimed his second consecutive CIAA 400m title and has established himself as a 400m hurdles specialist outdoors, reaching the finals in each of the last two years. Additional standouts include Lincoln (MO) senior Malik Drummond in the triple jump (season-best 15.39m, eighth-best in Division II), Virginia Union's Carson Calhoun in the high jump (personal-best 2.11m), and Claflin junior Jhnyia Knuckles and Livingstone sophomore Sabrena Hogan representing the CIAA in the women's triple jump. The championship represents an opportunity for these student-athletes to showcase the exceptional talent developed at HBCUs and compete for national glory on one of track and field's biggest stages.
