HBCU Star Emanuel Wilson Lands Fresh Opportunity with Seattle Seahawks
Posted By: Will Moss on March 14, 2026

The HBCU-to-NFL pipeline continues to deliver as Emanuel Wilson, a standout product of Johnson C. Smith University and Fort Valley State University, has secured a new chapter in his professional journey. Just days after becoming a free agent, the running back agreed to a one-year deal worth up to $2.1 million with the Seattle Seahawks, marking another significant milestone for a player who has built his career on perseverance and production.

Key Takeaway: Wilson's signing represents continued success for Division II HBCU athletes making their mark in the NFL, as the former undrafted free agent from 2023 lands a multi-million dollar deal with Seattle.

Seahawks See 'Something Different' in HBCU Product

Seattle's front office didn't hesitate to explain what attracted them to the former Green Bay Packers contributor. During an appearance on Seattle Sports radio, Seahawks general manager John Schneider praised his team's evaluation process and highlighted Wilson's unique skill set.

"Our pro staff did a great job evaluating and identifying Emanuel. Here's this 230-pound guy with great feet. You sign a one-year deal like that, it's kind of like a 'come in, be part of our culture, prove it and compete.' He gives us something different. He's a heavy runner."

That physical, downhill running style is exactly what Wilson demonstrated throughout his three seasons in Green Bay, consistently generating tough yards as a reliable rotational back.

Proven Production in Green Bay

Wilson's résumé with the Packers speaks to his reliability and efficiency.

Over three NFL seasons, the Charlotte native compiled impressive numbers behind three-time Pro Bowler Josh Jacobs:

  • 1,083 rushing yards
  • 7 rushing touchdowns
  • 4.5 yards per carry

During the 2025 season alone, Wilson rushed for 496 yards and three touchdowns on 125 carries while appearing in all 17 games. His breakout moment came in Week 12 against the Minnesota Vikings, when he made his first NFL start and delivered a memorable performance with 107 yards and two touchdowns—proof that he could handle expanded responsibilities when called upon.

Perfect Timing for Seattle Opportunity

Wilson arrives in the Pacific Northwest at an opportune moment. The Seahawks recently lost former star running back Kenneth Walker III in free agency after the Super Bowl MVP signed a three-year deal with the Kansas City Chiefs. Additionally, while Seattle still has backs like Zach Charbonnet, Cam Akers, and George Holani on the roster, Charbonnet is expected to miss the start of the season while recovering from knee surgery.

This situation could create early opportunities for Wilson to compete for significant carries as Seattle reshapes its backfield. Schneider indicated the team will continue evaluating the position, but Wilson's experience and productivity make him a valuable addition during this transition period.

HBCU Legacy Continues to Rise

For HBCU supporters, Wilson's journey remains one of the most inspiring examples of the pathway from CIAA and SIAC football fields to the NFL's biggest stages. After transferring from Johnson C. Smith to Fort Valley State, he rushed for more than 1,300 yards in his final collegiate season. Despite going undrafted in 2023, he transformed limited opportunities into real production at the professional level.

Now, as Wilson prepares to don a Seahawks uniform, HBCU fans who followed his rise from Division II football to Lambeau Field will watch the next chapter unfold—another reminder that talent developed at HBCUs can thrive anywhere in the NFL.
