Virginia Union Stuns No. 2 Seed West Liberty in NCAA Tournament Upset
Posted By: Will Moss on March 15, 2026

The Virginia Union Panthers proved that defense wins championships with a stunning 52-46 upset victory over No. 2 seed West Liberty in the opening round of the NCAA Division II Men's Basketball Atlantic Regional.

In a gritty, hard-fought battle that showcased the defensive prowess the CIAA program has built its reputation on this season, the Panthers silenced one of the nation's top teams and announced their arrival on the national tournament stage.

Key Takeaway: Virginia Union's suffocating defense held a high-powered No. 2 seed to just 46 points, earning the program's first NCAA Tournament victory since 2023.

Gardner Leads the Charge

Bobby Gardner delivered a masterclass performance, pouring in a game-high 23 points to lead the Panthers' offensive attack. His scoring punch proved critical in a low-scoring defensive slugfest that required every bucket.

Gardner received solid support from his teammates, with Noah Richardson-Keys contributing a double-digit effort of 11 points while pulling down eight rebounds.

Malachi Dark added nine points to the winning effort.

Dominating the Glass

The Panthers controlled the boards throughout the contest, with multiple players making significant contributions:

  • O'Maundre Harris anchored the rebounding effort with nine boards
  • Noah Richardson-Keys added eight rebounds to his scoring performance
  • Nehemiah Johnson chipped in seven rebounds

Defense Takes Center Stage

Head Coach Jay Butler praised his team's toughness while acknowledging the challenge West Liberty presented. His comments after the game reflected both respect for the opponent and pride in his team's defensive identity.

"Hats off to West Liberty. They're a very talented team, and we have to simulate their pressure in practice just to prepare. I told our guys we've been No. 1 in defense all year β€” it was time to show the world how good we are defensively."

Butler's words proved prophetic as his Panthers held West Liberty to just 46 points, validating their top-ranked defensive status with a statement performance on the tournament stage.

With this historic upset victory, Virginia Union advances to face No. 6 seed Indiana University of Pennsylvania at 5 p.m. Sunday in the next round of the Atlantic Regional. The Panthers will look to continue their tournament run and prove their opening-round statement was no fluke.
