Morehouse School of Medicine Secures $950,000 in Federal Funding for Academic & Research Building

Morehouse School of Medicine Secures $950,000 in Federal Funding for Academic & Research Building
Posted By: Roger The Great on March 16, 2026

Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM) has secured $950,000 in federal funding to support construction of a new Academic & Research building, marking a significant investment in the institution's capacity to train the next generation of Black physicians and advance biomedical research.

The funding was secured through the efforts of U.S. Rep. Nikema Williams, who represents Georgia's 5th congressional district. The nearly $1 million investment comes from 2023 Community Project funding and will directly support the medical school's expansion of biomedical research capabilities and workforce development initiatives.

Key Takeaway: This federal investment will enable Morehouse School of Medicine to expand its campus infrastructure while strengthening its mission to address healthcare workforce diversity and medical inequities affecting underserved communities.

Rep. Williams presented the ceremonial check to Dr. Valerie Rice, President and CEO of Morehouse School of Medicine, celebrating the partnership between federal government and the Atlanta-based institution. The congresswoman emphasized that the funding will bolster MSM's efforts to advance biomedical research while developing a more diverse healthcare workforce.

Addressing Critical Healthcare Disparities

As the only historically Black medical school in Atlanta, Morehouse School of Medicine plays a vital role in diversifying the medical profession. The institution educates a predominantly Black student body, with approximately 80% of students identifying as Black according to the Princeton Review.

While MSM is no longer affiliated with Morehouse College, it continues its legacy of preparing diverse medical professionals.

The timing of this investment is particularly significant given persistent diversity challenges in healthcare. The Association of American Medical Colleges confirmed that Black people accounted for only 5.3% of all medical professionals in 2023, underscoring the critical need for institutions like MSM that serve as pipelines for Black medical professionals.

"This investment helps Morehouse School of Medicine expand our campus and train more physicians and healthcare professionals who will serve communities here in Atlanta and across Georgia. We're grateful to Congresswoman Nikema Williams for her leadership and her continued commitment to strengthening healthcare and education in our community."
— Dr. Valerie Rice, President and CEO, Morehouse School of Medicine

Long-Term Impact on Medical Education

The new Academic & Research building will advance MSM's dual mission of expanding academic opportunities through research while addressing healthcare inequities throughout the U.S. medical system. The facility will provide enhanced training environments and research capabilities for students pursuing careers in medicine and healthcare professions.

This federal investment represents more than infrastructure development—it's a commitment to ensuring that future Black doctors have access to the training, resources, and research opportunities needed to serve diverse communities effectively. As healthcare disparities continue to impact communities of color nationwide, MSM's expanded capacity will help produce physicians equipped to address these challenges with cultural competency and medical excellence.
