HBCU AwareFest Launches in Atlanta to Combat $1.8 Trillion Student Loan Debt Crisis

HBCU AwareFest Launches in Atlanta to Combat $1.8 Trillion Student Loan Debt Crisis
Posted By: Will Moss on March 19, 2026

Student Freedom Initiative, in partnership with Live Nation Urban and the City of Atlanta, is bringing a weeklong series of events to Atlanta aimed at becoming the largest fundraiser dedicated to reducing student loan debt for HBCU scholars. HBCU AwareFest combines star-studded entertainment with critical programming addressing the disproportionate financial burden facing Black students.

Key Impact: Black students carry an average of $52,000 in student loan debt, a disproportionate share of the national $1.8 trillion student debt crisis. HBCU AwareFest directs 100% of proceeds toward reducing this burden for HBCU scholars.

The weeklong initiative kicks off March 21 at the Atlanta University Center Robert Woodruff Library and Promenade with Impact Fest, a daylong summit designed to equip students with essential knowledge and resources. The programming addresses critical topics including:

  • Financial empowerment and literacy, with sessions co-hosted by MC Lyte
  • Entrepreneurship panels for aspiring business leaders
  • Mental health awareness programming
  • Sexual health discussions led by TS Madison and Saucy Santana

Innovation Meets Opportunity

On March 22, HBCU AwareFest will host an AI Innovation Challenge, where students will pitch AI-powered projects to prominent tech leaders and business executives. This competitive event provides scholars the opportunity to showcase innovative solutions for real-world challenges while connecting with industry decision-makers.

The week continues with diverse programming including a comedy show featuring Deon Cole on March 24, followed by "The State of HBCUs" Executive Summit at the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church.

Moderated by Roland Martin, this summit will bring together HBCU presidents for both private sessions and a public Q&A panel focused on advancing these vital institutions.

Business Leaders Champion HBCU Investment

That evening, Anthony Anderson and Rosci Diaz will host the Casino Royale Fundraiser, featuring a live performance by Wyclef Jean and a special appearance by Magic Johnson. The high-profile event encourages attendees to make bold contributions toward eliminating student debt.

Prior to the benefit concert finale, billionaire investor Robert F. Smith—who famously eliminated the entire student loan debt for Morehouse College's Class of 2019—will lead a fireside chat. The Cornell alumnus will be joined by honored guests including entrepreneur Daymond John and Chris Womack.

The evening will spotlight an intimate conversation between Smith and filmmaker Tyler Perry discussing the future of Black wealth and entrepreneurship, and how HBCUs play a pivotal role in this development.

The week culminates with a star-studded benefit concert featuring headliners Jill Scott, Earth, Wind & Fire, Kirk Franklin, and Glorilla. VIP guests can experience the show from Smith's private viewing suite.

Registration is now open for all HBCU AwareFest events, with 100% of profits dedicated to reducing Black student loan debt. The initiative represents a collaborative effort between corporate partners, entertainment industry leaders, and business titans to address the financial barriers preventing HBCU scholars from achieving their academic goals without crippling debt.
