Florida Memorial University Makes History with First Female Athletic Director
Posted By: Will Moss on March 27, 2026

Florida Memorial University has shattered a glass ceiling in HBCU athletics. The Miami Gardens-based institution announced Wednesday that Chandra Dorsey-Felton will serve as its new Director of Athletics, becoming the first woman to hold the position in the university's history.

The appointment represents a watershed moment for the HBCU community, demonstrating continued progress in leadership diversity within collegiate athletics administration.

Historic Milestone: Chandra Dorsey-Felton becomes Florida Memorial University's first female Athletic Director, bringing over 25 years of collegiate athletics experience to lead 13 intercollegiate programs.

A Vote of Confidence from University Leadership

Florida Memorial University President William McCormick celebrated the historic appointment, emphasizing what it means for the institution's future direction.

Today marks a historic and defining moment for Florida Memorial University. It is with great pride and unwavering confidence that I announce the appointment of Chandra Dorsey-Felton as our first female Athletic Director.

President McCormick praised Dorsey-Felton's proven capabilities and comprehensive approach to athletic administration.

Chandra has demonstrated exceptional vision, discipline, and a deep commitment to the holistic success of our student-athletes, both on and off the field. Her elevation is a reflection of FMU's continued commitment to breaking barriers and building a culture of excellence.

From Interim Leader to Permanent Director

Dorsey-Felton's ascension to the top role followed a strategic progression through the department's leadership structure.

She was appointed Deputy Athletic Director for Student Success and Compliance on September 16, 2024, before being elevated to Interim Director of Athletics on October 1, 2025. Her successful navigation of the department through this transitional period earned her the permanent appointment.

Comprehensive Leadership Portfolio

With more than a quarter-century of collegiate athletics experience, Dorsey-Felton oversees a robust athletic program at Florida Memorial University that includes:

  • 13 intercollegiate athletic programs
  • Athletic compliance and eligibility operations
  • Student-athlete development initiatives

Her responsibilities ensure all programs operate within NAIA regulations while prioritizing academic achievement alongside athletic performance.

Dorsey-Felton articulated her vision for the department's future direction:

Florida Memorial University has a proud tradition of excellence, and I am honored to lead this department. Our focus will remain on developing student-athletes who succeed in the classroom, in competition, and in the community.

Distinguished Division I Background

Before joining Florida Memorial University, Dorsey-Felton established herself as a women's basketball coach and administrator across multiple Division I programs, including:

  • Tulane University
  • Texas State University
  • Wichita State University
  • McNeese State University
  • University of Southern Mississippi
  • University of Tulsa

Her extensive Division I experience now enriches Florida Memorial's NAIA athletic program, positioning the university for continued growth and success in collegiate athletics.
