WNBA Star Angel Reese Opens Up About Her Dream to Attend Howard University

WNBA Star Angel Reese Opens Up About Her Dream to Attend Howard University
Posted By: Will Moss on April 03, 2026

Angel Reese, one of the WNBA's brightest stars, recently made waves in the HBCU community when she revealed a personal dream that never came to fruition—attending a Historically Black College or University.

Speaking at HBCU Awarefest in Atlanta, the Maryland native opened up about her deep connection to HBCU culture and one institution in particular that captured her heart.

"I always wanted to go to Howard… I always wanted to go to an HBCU."

Howard University: A Dream Deferred

For Reese, Howard University wasn't just another school on her list—it was at the very top. The combination of the university's stellar reputation and its Washington, D.C. location made it feel like a natural fit for the talented athlete who hails from Maryland.

However, like many elite athletes, Reese faced a difficult decision that many HBCU supporters understand all too well.

"I always wanted to go to Howard, but I also wanted to play in the Power Five, so tough decision."

That decision ultimately led her down a different path. Reese began her college career at the University of Maryland before transferring to LSU, where she would achieve extraordinary success.

Key Takeaway: Even as she chose a Power Five path, Angel Reese's heart remained connected to HBCU culture, demonstrating the lasting cultural significance these institutions hold for Black athletes and students.

LSU Stardom and National Championship Glory

At Louisiana State University, Reese transformed into one of the most recognizable names in women's college basketball.

Her accomplishments at LSU included:

  • Winning a national championship
  • Becoming one of the most recognizable players in the sport
  • Elevating her brand to a national level

Her journey at LSU helped redefine what it means to be a modern college athlete, but her story with HBCUs wasn't over.

A Promise for the Future

Perhaps the most touching moment of Reese's appearance at HBCU Awarefest came when she spoke about her future connection to the HBCU experience—one that doesn't involve basketball.

"In my second life, I will be an HBCU alum… and I will be a Howard alum."

This declaration speaks volumes about the enduring cultural pull that HBCUs maintain, even among athletes who ultimately choose different collegiate paths.

Why This Matters for Our Community

Angel Reese is one of the most influential athletes in women's basketball today. When a player of her stature speaks openly about HBCUs, it brings tremendous visibility and value to our institutions.

Her comments also reflect several important trends:

  • More athletes are considering HBCUs as legitimate options
  • HBCU athletics continues to gain national attention
  • Cultural pride remains a major factor in decision-making for Black students and athletes

Events like HBCU Awarefest serve as crucial platforms for celebrating HBCU culture and connecting students, alumni, and influencers. Reese's presence at the event brought even more attention to its mission, sparking important conversations about opportunity, identity, and legacy within the HBCU community.
