Howard University Alum, 23, Vies to Make History as Bowie's Youngest Mayor

Howard University Alum, 23, Vies to Make History as Bowie
Posted By: Will Moss on April 07, 2026

Rebecca Pearce, a 23-year-old Howard University graduate, is making waves in Maryland politics as she campaigns to become the youngest mayor in Bowie's history. The special election on April 7 will determine whether this rising HBCU leader can claim the city's top office.

Pearce announced her candidacy in late February, joining a crowded field of nine candidates competing to fill the vacancy left by former Mayor Tim Adams, who resigned in February after his appointment to the Prince George's County Council.

Key Takeaway: This race showcases the expanding influence of HBCU graduates in public service, with a Howard alumna positioned to lead a city of over 50,000 residents.

A Legacy of Leadership

Pearce's journey to this moment began at Bowie High School, where she served as student body president and graduated in the top 10% of her class.

She then attended Howard University, where she earned her bachelor's degree with honors in just three years—a testament to her drive and academic excellence.

Her background reflects a growing pipeline of HBCU graduates entering leadership roles across the nation, bringing fresh perspectives to local governance.

Platform Focused on Affordability and Growth

According to her campaign platform and recent interviews, Pearce has outlined several key policy priorities that resonate with Bowie residents:

  • Addressing affordability by targeting property taxes and rising utility costs
  • Strengthening collaboration with local schools
  • Supporting small businesses and economic development
  • Improving city services, including sanitation and infrastructure

Pearce has also committed to advocating for residents at the state level while focusing on accountability within local government operations.

I am running because I always knew I was always going to go into office. If not now, then when?

Those words from her March interview with PGCTV reflect Pearce's long-standing commitment to public service.

Professional Experience in Policy and Advocacy

Despite her youth, Pearce brings substantial professional credentials to the race. Her experience includes working as a law clerk intern supporting legislative efforts in Maryland and advocacy work with One Fair Wage, an organization focused on wage policy.

She has also contributed to political campaigns, handling fundraising and communications for congressional and legislative candidates. Currently, Pearce works as an account executive at a political consulting firm, bringing campaign expertise to her own mayoral bid.

As the youngest candidate in the race, Pearce has emphasized the importance of youth engagement and long-term planning in local government. Through social media outreach, she has encouraged young adults to participate in civic life and pursue leadership opportunities—a message that resonates with the next generation of voters.

The Bowie mayoral special election takes place on April 7, when voters will choose from nine candidates to determine their city's next leader.
