Posted By: Will Moss on April 08, 2026

The Norfolk State Spartans men's track and field team showcased their speed and depth at their home invitational, delivering impressive performances across multiple sprint events that highlighted the program's competitive strength.

The Spartans made their presence felt early in the 100-meter dash, where Antoinne Smith led the way with a fourth-place finish, crossing the line in 10.41 seconds. Smith wasn't alone in representing Norfolk State at the top of the field, as Julian Ward claimed eighth place with a time of 10.55, while Christopher Basking finished just behind in ninth with 10.56.

Key Takeaway: Norfolk State demonstrated remarkable depth in the sprints, placing multiple athletes in the top tier of both the 100m and 200m events at their home invitational.

The depth of the Spartan sprint squad became even more apparent in the 200-meter dash, where Norfolk State fielded five competitors in the top dozen finishers. Kendrick Winfield paced the group with an outstanding fourth-place performance, clocking 21.13 seconds.

Ward continued his strong day on the track with a fifth-place showing at 21.20, demonstrating his versatility across sprint distances.

The Spartans' impressive showing continued with Smith adding a seventh-place finish in 21.39, followed closely by Donovan Terry in ninth at 21.42. Rounding out Norfolk State's scoring efforts was Lavontay Bond, who placed 12th with a time of 21.48.

Sprint Squad Shows Championship Potential

The home invitational performances underscore the competitive firepower that Norfolk State has assembled in its sprint program. With multiple athletes posting solid times and the team showing the ability to score points through depth, the Spartans appear well-positioned for the remainder of the season.

The meet results highlight not only individual excellence but also the comprehensive nature of Norfolk State's track and field program, where athletes are developing at multiple levels to contribute to the team's overall success. As the season progresses, these strong early showings at home could serve as a foundation for even greater achievements ahead for the Spartan track and field family.
